MARCH SADNESS The NCAA men's basketball tournament seemed to lack excitement this year. Dick Vitale was probably falling asleep to numbers like these: Of the tournament's 65 games, 41 were decided by 10 points or more. Only 12 games were decided by four points or fewer. North Carolina's blowout win against Michigan State in the final didn't help. The game drew a 10.8 TV rating, the lowest rating recorded for a championship game. Something that could help: push the game up an hour (And I'm not saying that just to make it easier on sports copy editors). CBS's free online service did attract 7.52 million unique visitors during the tournament, up 58 percent from 2008's 4.62 million. By the way, if you're putting money on games played at Detroit's Ford Field, do some research and find out what teams are occupying the locker rooms. Since Ford Field opened in 2002, six men's basketball teams have stayed in the hapless Lions' locker room and all have lost. That includes UConn and Villanova in last week's national semifinals and the Spartans in the championship game (Insert Lions joke here). THE POWER OF TIGER CBS was hoping Tiger Woods remained in contention at the Masters this weekend. According to Nielsen Media, after Woods' season-ending knee injury last year, ratings for tournaments he had played in 2007 dropped almost in half in 2008. CBS has to be sweating a little more this weekend with Woods, Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia nowhere near the leaderboard. SCHEDULE THE NFL INTO YOUR PLANS Tuesday is a big day for couch potatoes everywhere, as the NFL will announce the 2009 schedule. ESPN2 (35) will begin its three-hour coverage (Yes, three hours) at 6 p.m. ESPN (34) will pick it up at 7 p.m. Apparently, HBO is having a hard time finding a team to document for "Hard Knocks," a show that follows an NFL team during training camp. The Dallas Cowboys did it last year. CHANNEL SURFING You can catch Joba Chamberlain's first start of the season today on FSN (37) when the Yankees play at Kansas City, home to Alex Gordon. The game starts at 1 p.m. ... ESPN's E:60 returns at 6 p.m Tuesday. AROUND THE LOCAL SCENE There's two big events in Lincoln this week. The Red-White Spring Game takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Stadium. Tickets are still available. ... The Devaney Sports Center will host the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships Thursday through Saturday. ... The NU baseball team hosts Iowa at 6 p.m. Tuesday, then travels to Texas A&M for a three-game series beginning Friday. ... The NU softball team will host Iowa State at 5 p.m. Thursday.
