Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour coming to Brighton

BRIGHTON -- One of Canada's premiere junior golf tours will stop in Brighton this summer.
The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour is run by Canadian PGA ( Professional Golf Association) in each province. This year the tour is making a record 16 stops in Ontario, with one of them at Timber Ridge Golf Course in Brighton, August 14-15. Where some tours focus more on fun and recreation and others on serious competition, this one tries to find a balance between the two.
"We reward participation and performance," said Elaine Denton, from the Maple Leaf head office in B.C. "The program is about developing junior golf."
With that in mind, every event features a range of gifts, prizes, trophies and refreshments.
"We run a tour that's not only competitive, but fun for the kids," said Ontario pro Dave Smallwood.
Also at stake in the Brighton tournament is an open invitation to a major junior event in the U.S. The Maple Leaf tour and its competitors are held in high esteem within the golf community, Smallwood said.
"It's a recognized tour. We're a stepping stone," said Smallwood, noting that Maple Leaf graduates have gone on to success in both collegiate and provincial golf.
This will be the second time the Maple Leaf tour will stop at Timber Ridge, though it hasn't done so in many years. When organizers decided to expand the tour's Ontario segment this year, returning to Brighton was a natural.
"It's a fantastic venue for the kids. We're very excited about it," said Smallwood.
Aside from tough competition, Maple Leaf golfers must also contend with the extra day and round. It's not enough to play a great 18 holes.
"It's about how you sleep on the lead," said Smallwood. "It's a different animal when you're playing 36 holes."
There are divisions for boys 13 and under, 14-16 and 17-19, as well as for girls 11-19. Registration for the two-day tournament is $169 and forms are available at <a href="http://www.maplejt.com">www.maplejt.com .
