Born: May 26, 1977, Columbus, Ohio
He fought off a leaderboard that read like a "Who's Who." Thomas Bjorn, Davis Love III, Sergio Garcia, Tiger Woods, Kenny Perry, Vijay Singh. And Ben Curtis. Curtis was so under the radar that when fans see he is a resident of Kent, they think Kent, England, the county in which Open course Royal St. George's is located. In actuality, Curtis, a rookie on the PGA Tour this season, resides in Kent, Ohio. After rounds of 72-72, Curtis turned in a four-birdie 70 and started Sunday tied for third, just two shots off the lead of Bjorn. By the end of the day he was the Open champion. Curtis turned pro in 2000 and was making his first Open Championship start. Curtis was a U.S. Amateur semifinalist in 1999 and turned pro a year later. He played the Hooters Tour the from 2000-'02 and earned his 2003 PGA Tour card with a 26th-place finish in the Qualifying Tournament. In 13 previous starts, he made eight cuts, but had just one top-25 finish, a tie for 13th at the Western Open two weeks ago. That finish qualified him for the Open.
