Clifton Smith Scouting Report

Smith has the size the NFL is looking for in its linebackers but is really lacking in the speed department. He is excellent versus the run but a liability in the passing game. He is a powerful and sure tackler. He knows how to play with leverage. He does a good job of taking on blockers and then disengaging from them. He is an improving blitzer and has nice closing speed. Smith is much better playing between the tackles as opposed to going wide. He lacks the speed to play sideline-to-sideline. He isn't fluid in turning and running with receivers, nor does he have the speed to do it. He isn't much better in zone coverage, as he really lacks a feel for it. Smith is a tough competitor who leaves it all on the field, but right now he is a two down linebacker at best.
