Position: College: Miami, Fla. Height: 5-11 Weight: 195 40-yard dash: 4.42 Fun fact: First-Team All-Big East Conference choice, and third-team All-America selection by The Associated Press in 2001 Hometown: Gainesville, Fla. Portis is next in line to prove that Miami has become Running Back U. However, that does present a problem for Portis. Since Miami has had so many good backs lately, he only started for one season. In that one year though, he had an outstanding season. Portis is not a big back, but he is a physical runner. He needs to add about 10 or 15 pounds to his frame without losing any speed, which he should be able to do. He has a lot of leg strength and will get yards after contact. He does a good job of seeing the field and will explode through holes in the line. Portis will make the cutback move and is an elusive runner. Despite his lack of bulk, he is an effective runner between the tackles. He also has the speed to get to the outside. He knows how to read his blockers and allow the play develop in front of him. Once he gets into the secondary, he has a second gear and is a punishing runner for defensive backs to bring down. Portis is an effective and willing blocker; he just lacks the size to handle the biggerNFL defenders. His hands are a question mark, as he was not used very often as a receiver. If he spends time working on catching the ball, he can be an effective weapon out of the backfield, due to his speed and elusiveness. There is the question of his being able to handle a full load as a starting tailback in the NFL. He did seem to get stronger as games wore on, so that makes many think he can be an every down back.
