Kasey Kahne starts second in Saturday's Diamond Hill Plywood 200
DARLINGTON, S.C.Kasey Kahne, driver of the No. 38 Great Clips Dodge, starts on the outside pole in Saturday's Diamond Hill Plywood 200 NASCAR Busch Series race at Darlington Raceway. Kahne completed his qualifying lap in 29.167 seconds with an average speed of 168.602 mph. Rookie Kyle Busch took the pole after posting a lap time of 29.164 seconds, only three thousandths (.003) of a second faster than Kahne.
"I'm pretty excited about that lap," said Kahne. "I was tight off (turn) four this morning during practice, so the team worked hard to get the car ready for qualifying. They gave me an awesome car."
In the first four events of the season, Kahne has not qualified out of the top 10 (Daytona International Speedway-ninth; North Carolina Speedway-fourth; Las Vegas Motor Speedway-third; and Darlington Raceway-second).
"We have a really good qualifying program. I enjoy qualifying, and we've been pretty good at it. Last year we had strong qualifying runs as well, so hopefully we'll keep qualifying in the top 10 if not the top five for the rest of the season.
"We're getting closer to first. It was close. Kyle (Busch) was three thousandths of a second faster than me, so that's pretty close.
"The track feels really good. It always feels good at Darlington, and I've always liked racing here. When you can run well it helps everyone's confidence level. From the guys at the shop to the ones here at the track, everyone feels it when you qualify well or have a good finish. Everyone on this Great Clips team deserves the credit for this one. It's a great starting spot, and we plan to finish up there too.
Kahne is currently 20th in series point standings.
Following Busch and Kahne in the top five for Saturday's race are Kenny Wallace, Greg Biffle and Jason Leffler.
The Diamond Hill Plywood 200 gets the green flag at 1 p.m. EST Saturday. FX and MRN radio have live coverage.
