The first Iowa State quarterback to throw for more than 3,000 yards in one season, Wallace made the most of his relatively brief tenure with the Cyclones, leading the squad to its third-straight postseason appearance for the first time in school history. Initially recruited as a defensive back and special teamer by Oregon State, he opted instead to hone his offensive skills at the JUCO level, transferring to Sacramento City College. He led the Panthers to two consecutive Capital Shrine Bowl championships, throwing for 1,398 yards and seven touchdowns as a freshman, and 3,675 yards and 22 TDs as an All-American sophomore. Given the chance to compete at quarterback, he transferred to Iowa State prior to the 2001 campaign, where he immediately claimed the starting spot. He earned Big 12 Conference Offensive Newcomer of the Year honors, connecting on a school-record 62.1 percent of his 269 attempts, while topping the team with 2,044 passing yards and 11 touchdown tosses. Last year, he continued to thrive as one of the league's most elusive double-threats, setting an ISU single-season passing mark with 3,245 yards and rushing for a squad-high eight TDs. Iowa State's second-leading all-time passer after just two years in Ames, Wallace will have to erase the negative impression left by his team's season-ending four-game losing streak, during which time he connected on just 47 percent of his attempts and threw eight interceptions against just two scores.
