LAS VEGAS

Tony Stewart, driver of the #20 Home Depot Chevrolet, qualified 19th for Sunday's UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"I slowed down too much going into (turn) one," said Stewart. "But I was pretty good through (turns) three and four. All in all, we're okay. It was just one lap. There will be a lot more laps to run on Sunday."

Stewart toured the 1.5-mile oval in 31.263 seconds with an average speed of 172.728 mph. Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate - Bobby Labonte - qualified seventh with a time of 31.059 seconds at an average speed of 173.863 mph.

Rookie driver Kasey Kahne captured his first career pole position with a track record time of 30.874 seconds at an average speed of 172.728 mph. Rounding out the top-five were Kurt Busch (30.874 seconds at 174.904 mph), rookie Brian Vickers (30.939 seconds at 174.548 mph), Jamie McMurray (30.957 seconds at 174.436 mph) and Ryan Newman (30.974 seconds at 174.340 mph).

Forty-four drivers attempted to qualify for the 267-lap race. The lone driver not making the cut in the 43-car field was Larry Gunselman.

As far as manufacturers went, Dodge took three of the top five spots, led by Kahne and followed by McMurray and Newman. Ford was next best at the hands of Busch, while Chevrolet settled in with the third quickest time care of Vickers.

The UAW-DaimlerChrysler 400 gets underway on Sun., March 7 at 3 p.m. EST. FOX will carry live coverage of the event.
