Barbaro decidely won the 132nd Kentucky Derby after a five-week layoff — one of the longest in Derby history — and was a Triple Crown contender, only to meet his fate two weeks later at the Preakness where he fractured three bones in his leg. After multiple surgeries to repair the leg, Barbaro was euthanized in January 2007.
