Derby winner Strike the Gold dies

Strike the Gold, who gave trainer Nick Zito his first Kentucky Derby victory, has been euthanized, reports said Wednesday.
The Blood-Horse reported the 1991 Derby champion was put down Tuesday at Karacabey Stud Farm in Turkey. Strike the Gold was 23.
Daily Racing Form reported that Strike the Gold was euthanized after he suffered a heart attack and a broken fetlock in the subsequent fall. He had been battling laminitis, a potentially deadly hoof disease, but was showing signs of recovery, the report said.
Strike the Gold had been a stallion in Turkey since 1999.
"He was successful in Turkey, a good sire year after year," bloodstock adviser Jean-Pierre Deroubaix told the Daily Racing Form. "Nothing exceptional, but he was producing year after year, very good horses."
The Derby victory was the highlight of Strike the Gold's career, but he also finished second in the Belmont Stakes that year. He was sixth in the middle leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness. He also won the Blue Grass Stakes leading up to the Derby.
Zito, who also won the Derby in 1994 with Go for Gin, kept Strike the Gold in training through his 5-year-old season. Strike the Gold won six of 31 career starts for earnings of nearly $3.5 million.
