APRIL IN THE D Song Contest Winner Announced
by FOXSports.com
The Good Luck Joes, a band of musicians from Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor, has been selected winner of the APRIL IN THE D Song Contest that will be used to promote that month's offering of approximately 40 Tigers, Pistons and Red Wings games on FOX Sports Detroit, FOX Sports Detroit Plus and FOX Sports Detroit HD.
Following a month-long call for entries, a panel of judges from FOX Sports Detroit and WRIF Radio trimmed a field of 70 submitted songs down to three finalists, with the winner determined by public online voting. The Good Luck Joes received 43% of the more than 2,000 votes, besting songs performed by The Effort (Grand Rapids) and J. Legardy (Detroit).
The APRIL IN THE D song submitted by The Good Luck Joes will be featured in FOX Sports Detroit on-air promos and radio commercials throughout April. The band also receives $5,000, a produced music video and a live gig on April 10 during WRIF's baseball opening day party at the Fillmore Theatre.
The Good Luck Joes – consisting of lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Andrew Martin (23, Ann Arbor), Andrew Krei (24, lead guitar/vocals, Grand Rapids), Andrew Citron (23, keyboards, Ann Arbor), Peterson Goodwyn (23, drums, Grand Rapids) and Joe Scheltema (23, bass/vocals, Grand Rapids) – formed in 2002 as students at East Grand Rapids High School. The band has had five CD releases and has played venues across the country including the House of Blues and the Viper Room.
"This is such an exciting time for us. We all grew up loving Detroit sports, and to be able to combine our musical talent with our enthusiasm for the Red Wings, Pistons, and Tigers is very cool," Martin said. "It's not often that a person's passions get to intersect. Sports and music are two of my passions and I'm really glad to have this unique opportunity."
FOX Sports Detroit's APRIL IN THE D campaign debuted last spring, in keeping with the ongoing ‘D' branding effort by the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau. The 2008 theme song was performed by the Los Angeles-based alternative rock band Blacklist Union. This year there was a desire to use bands from the FOX Sports Detroit coverage area.
"I am so glad we listened to our fans and provided this opportunity for local bands to be part of APRIL IN THE D. This contest was gratifying on many levels, particularly having so many strong entries to consider," said Greg Hammaren, Senior Vice President/General Manager, FOX Sports Detroit. "I've become a big fan of the Good Luck Joes as a result of this contest and I am thrilled that they will be an 'instrumental' part of our network for April."
FOX Sports Detroit programming goes to 3.2 million cable and satellite households throughout Michigan and portions of Northwest Ohio and Northern Indiana.
