Wes Welker’s departure from New England took the NFL by surprise in March. After six seasons playing alongside Tom Brady, Welker decided to call the Patriots’ bluff and agree to a two-year deal worth $12 million with the Broncos — a deal that was assisted by FOX Football Daily panelist John Lynch.
Lynch, who shares the same agent as the veteran wide receiver, recalled the conversation he had with Welker on FOX Football Daily Friday.
“He said John would you talk to your buddy [John] Elway and let me talk to him,” Lynch remembered Welker telling him. “Get me on the phone with him and I’ll sell him on why I can help Denver win a Super Bowl. He said there’s two places I’m playing, it’s Denver or New England cause I’ll either play for Tom or Peyton. Just let me get on the phone.
“I talked to John and said, “Just talk to the guy.” He talked to the guy and signed him the next day.”
While Welker has been sidelined the last two preseason games with an ankle injury, several analysts have wondered exactly how he’ll be utilized in Denver.
Lynch remembers that Welker told him that if team double team Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas, he’ll make them pay underneath.
