ST. LOUIS – Adam Wainwright and Jaime Garcia will start the first two games of the National League Division Series for the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.
Chris Carpenter will start Game 3 in Washington and Kyle Lohse will pitch Game 4. Should the series go to a deciding fifth game, Wainwright would make his second start of the series.
The Cardinals announced the rotation during Saturday afternoon’s workout at Busch Stadium.
Wainwright earned the Game 1 start thanks to a 14-13 record in the regular season and a 3.94 ERA. Wainwright needs just 1 1/3 innings to surpass 200 for the year – notable because he missed all of the 2011 season due to Tommy John surgery.
Garcia pitches much better at home and earns the start at Busch Stadium in Game 2. The lefty was 4-2 with a 2.82 ERA in 60 2/3 innings at home during the regular season and 3-5 with a 5.02 ERA in 61 innings on the road.
Carpenter made three starts to finish the season after missing nearly all of the regular season due to a nerve issue in his shoulder that eventually required surgery in July. He allowed seven earned runs in 17 innings, good for a 3.71 ERA.
Lohse allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings Friday in the wild card game in Atlanta, earning his first career postseason win. He went 16-3 with a 2.86 ERA in the regular season.
The Nationals also announced their pitching rotation for the series. All-Star lefty Gio Gonzalez will pitch in Game 1, Jordan Zimmermann in Game 2, Edwin Jackson in Game 3 and Ross Detwiler in Game 4.
First pitch Sunday for Game 1 is set for 2:07 PM CT.
