San Francisco closer Brian Wilson probably has the most famous beard in the game of baseball today. Unfortunately for the Giants, the eccentric reliever had season-ending Tommy John surgery in April. But you can bet Wilson and his long whiskers will be in the San Francisco dugout cheering on his teammates against the Detroit Tigers throughout the World Series.

With Brian Wilson on the shelf, reliever Sergio Romo stepped up late in the season and took over the Giants' closer role ... along with a beard of his own and the admiration of San Francisco fans. Romo had just three career saves before the year started, but he saved 14 regular-season games in 2012, plus one in the postseason. In the NLCS, Romo retired the final batter in each of the Giants' wins over the Cardinals — but they weren't save situations because San Fran led by too many runs.

The Tigers' top facial look probably belongs to Prince Fielder. In his first season with Detroit — after seven with the Brewers — the slugger hopes to get his beard one more champagne shower before 2012 ends. Prince's father, Cecil, ranks fifth on the Tigers' all-time home run list with 245. Prince has 260 career homers, but 230 were hit with Milwaukee.

Forget the crazy look in his eyes, San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence could use a trip to the barber, no? Here, he makes a diving catch in the NLCS against St. Louis. Behind his pregame motivational speeches, the Giants rallied in the NLDS against the Reds after trailing the series 2-0 and then in the NLCS vs. the Cards after being down 3-1.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde was untouchable in 2011, saving all 49 of his opportunities. This season, the right-hander saved 35-of-40 chances, but struggled in the postseason, leaving the door open for ...

... Phil Coke. The lefty only had six career saves before the 2012 postseason, but Coke saved three of the four Detroit wins against the New York Yankees in the ALCS. 

Tigers Alex Avila won't be able to hide his thin beard behind the catcher's mask the entire series. From the looks of his smile, he seems to like it. Before this World Series, Avila owned two postseason homers, one vs. the A's in the ALDS while his first occurred in the 2011 ALCS loss to the Rangers.

Center fielder Angel Pagan, who was acquired from the Mets before the season, adds some hairy depth to the Giants. The switch-hitting speedster batted .288 with eight homers, 15 triples and 56 RBI to go along with 29 stolen bases in his first season with San Francisco. Pagan hit a homer apiece in this year's NLDS and NLCS.

Can't forget Tim Lincecum's long flowing locks, can we? Lincecum, who struggled this season and was removed from the Giants starting rotation when the playoffs began, has come up big out of the bullpen during the postseason.

San Francisco third baseman Pablo Sandoval might not have an interesting beard, but his orange top stands out. Kung Fu Panda combined to hit .340 with three homers and nine RBI in the NLDS and NLCS this season.

Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland sports his nicely-trimmed mustache during batting practice. Leyland, who is in his 21st year of managing, won a World Series title with the Florida Marlins in 1997. He took the Tigers to the Fall Classic in 2006, but they lost in five games to the Cardinals. Leyland also managed the Pirates and Rockies during his career.

OK, it's not the dudes from ZZ Top, but San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval (left), Jose Mijares (right) and Hector Sanchez could pass for a jamming three-man band, no?
