Cubs manager Lou Piniella, 66, announced Tuesday he will retire at the end of the season. He's been in baseball for 40 years, including 18 years in the majors as a player and another 22 as a manager. He made five trips to the World Series in his career and has three championship rings. He appeared in the 1972 All-Star Game as a player.

A right-handed outfielder, Piniella was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1969 after batting .282 with 11 homers and 68 RBIs with the Royals.

The Royals traded Piniella to the Yankees in 1973 and he ended his playing career with New York in 1984. In all, he played 18 years in the majors — 11 with the Yankees — and was a career .291 hitter. He won two World Series as a player, in 1977 and 1978.
 

Piniella began managing in 1986 with the Yankees and lasted three years, including a stint as general manager.

In 2004, Piniella's Devil Rays played the Yankees in the season-opening games March 30 and 31 at the Tokyo Dome. Piniella is pictured with N.Y. outfielder Hideki Matsui and Devil Rays infielder Tino Martinez.

Piniella worked for colorful Cincinnati Reds owner Marge Schott, managing the team from 1990-92 and leading them to a World Series championship in his first season. 

Even as a manager, Sweet Lou alwasy looked as if he could come off the bench and pinch hit.

After Cincinnati, Piniella had a long run in Seattle, where he managed Alex Rodriguez's first seven major league seasons. Piniella's Seattle teams won at least 90 games four times. The Mariners went 116-46 in 2001, but lost in the AL championship series to the Yankees. His 1995 and 2000 Mariners teams also fell in the ALCS.

Piniella was known for his fiery temper and his dirt-kicking, base-tossing tantrums directed at umpires.

Piniella headed home to his native Tampa to manage the Devil Rays in 2003. The team bought out the final year of his four-year contract.

Piniella was introduced as the new manager of the Chicago Cubs on Oct. 17, 2006.

Piniella has enjoyed his time in Chicago and has a friendly relationship Ozzie Guillen, manager of the crosstown rival Chicago White Sox.

Piniella's Cubs clinched the National League Central Division after they defeated the Cincinnati Reds 6-0 at Great American Ballpark 2007.

Piniella never lost the fire he was known for throughout his storied career.

Piniella's record with the Cubs was 316-293. Under the mellowed skipper, Chicago won consecutive NL Central titles in 2007-08, but missed the playoffs last year and has struggled again this season with a new owner in charge.
