MLB 49 8 Worst contracts in sports history 31874163 Michael Vick Michael+Vick MLB

The Falcons gave Michael Vick a 10-year multimillion-dollar extension in 2005. He made the Pro Bowl in his first season after signing the deal — largely due to his running prowess — but that was the lone highlight. The team went just 15-17 the next two seasons, and that was the last we'd ever see of Vick in a Falcons jersey. He ended up serving a 23-month prison sentence for his role in a dog-fighting organization and was released.

After a strong NBA playoff performance with Seattle after the 2004-05 season, the New York Knicks somewhat surprisingly gave free agent Jerome James a big multiyear offer. He showed up to Knicks camp out of shape and was plagued by injuries. He appeared in only 90 games in four seasons, averaging fewer than three points per game.

In July 2008, Wade Redden signed with the New York Rangers. He had come from Ottawa, where he was the highest-paid player on the team and faced criticism for not playing up to expectations. It didn't get better in the Big Apple. By September 2010, the Rangers had put him on waivers.

Allan Houston, by then something of a Knicks legend, signed a maximum contract extension with New York in 2001. He missed 32 games in the 2003-04 season with a knee injury and played in just 20 games the following season due to the same issue. He ultimately retired in October 2005. The situation led the NBA to create a special rule to guard teams against such situations in the future.

The Redskins made Adam Archuleta the highest-paid safety in NFL history in March 2006, but he started only seven of 16 games that year. By the end of the 2006 season, he was being used primarily on special teams. Washington ultimately traded him for a sixth-round draft pick to Chicago, where he also languished before spending his final year in the league with the Raiders.

One of the poster boys for bad contracts, goalie Rick DiPietro signed a huge 15-year contract with the New York Islanders in 2006. After two solid years in net, he began battling injuries and appeared in just 50 games between 2008 and 2013. In March 2008, the Raiders coughed up big bucks to secure DeAngelo Hall after acquiring him in a trade with the Redskins. The deal seemed appropriate for a two-time Pro Bowler, but Hall was released in November after just eight games because the team said he had failed to adapt to their style. He returned to the Redskins and went on to win the Pro Bowl MVP award after the 2010 season.

None of the players on this list can possibly be laughing as much as Bobby Bonilla. Desperate not to pay him the $5.9 million they owed him after the 1999 season, the New York Mets cut a deal with him. MLB 49 8 Worst contracts in sports history 31873289 Alex Rodriguez Alex+Rodriguez MLB

Alex Rodriguez is on the list for not one, but two monstrous deals. The first was with the Texas Rangers in 2000 after he had risen to prominence with the Mariners. A-Rod won the AL MVP award in 2003, but the Rangers, hamstrung by the huge payments, looked to trade him anyway. They succeeded, as the Yankees agreed to take him on, with Texas still paying part of the salary. After the 2007 season, he re-upped with the Yankees for even more moola. Now that he is battling injuries and embroiled in a steroid controversy, the deal seems even loftier.

Almost immediately upon receiving his big contract in 2001 after being traded from Ottawa to the New York Islanders, Alexei Yashin was taking heat for being overpaid. Yashin struggled early on in the contract before achieving something of a resurgence with a new crop of players around him in 2006-07. But the success was short-lived.
