San Diego Padres @ Miami Marlins

Scheduled Start Time: 1:10 PM ET

Marlins Park

(Sports Network) - For nearly the last two months, Andrew Cashner has helped the Padres remain in contention in the NL West.

The right-hander, who has just one loss in his last nine appearances, takes the mound this afternoon in the third installment of a four-game series against the Miami Marlins.

The Padres, who enter the day 2 1/2 games behind first-place Arizona, have won six of Cashner's last nine starts, but have dropped the last two. His most recent start came a week ago against the Dodgers at Petco Park when he allowed just one run on five hits over eight innings in a no-decision.

Cashner has a 4-1 mark in his last nine appearances, and that includes a win against the Marlins on May 6 to start the streak. In that game in San Diego, Cashner allowed four hits in 7 1/3 shutout frames.

Nathan Eovaldi, who has spent the majority of this season on the disabled list, makes his third start of the year for the Marlins. The righty is coming off his first win, a week ago at San Francisco when he tossed six-plus innings and allowed a pair of runs on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Eovaldi, who was sidelined by right shoulder inflammation to start the season, has thrown at least six innings in five straight starts going back to last year. This will be his second time facing the Padres.

Last night, Jacob Turner tossed his first career complete game, and Jeff Mathis contributed a two-run single, as Miami dumped San Diego, 7-1.

Turner (2-0) scattered seven hits and one run, fanning seven and issuing only one walk to post his first victory in almost one month. The 22-year-old right- hander lowered his earned run average to 1.76 with the effort.

Giancarlo Stanton homered, with Marcell Ozuna, Placido Polanco and Adeiny Hechevarria contributing an RBI apiece for the Marlins, who have taken six of their last eight games.

Nick Hundley collected two hits, including a run-scoring double for the Padres, losers in five of their last seven.

Eric Stults (6-6) didn't make it beyond the fourth inning, departing after giving up seven hits and six runs -- five earned -- over 3 2/3 frames.

The Padres swept a three-game set versus the Marlins in San Diego from May 6-8, outscoring Miami 11-1.
