Philadelphia Phillies @ Atlanta Braves

Scheduled Start Time: 7:10 PM ET

Turner Field

(Sports Network) - Milestones and personal pride are about all that is left for the Philadelphia Phillies this season.

They accomplished both on Monday.

The Phillies try to secure a series victory over the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night in the middle contest of a three-game series at Turner Field.

Philadelphia came into last night's opener having lost 17 of its previous 20 games and had 13-game loser Cole Hamels on the mound.

Hamels was able to extend his recent run of success, taking a shutout into the ninth inning of a 5-1 victory. He struck out nine and yielded six hits, including an RBI double to Chris Johnson in the ninth inning.

'It's something where I know we haven't done it much,' Hamels said about the chance to throw a shutout. 'But we have to start something. This is the pride we all have.'

Cody Asche hit a three-run homer to help the Phillies snap an 11-game road losing streak and finally give manager Charlie Manuel his 1,000th career win.

Julio Teheran gave up four runs on six hits in six frames for Atlanta and suffered his first loss since July 14.

Jason Heyward had two hits and Justin Upton scored for Atlanta, which had lost just three of its previous 20 games prior to the opener.

'Anytime you play the Phillies, this can happen with the guys they're running out there,' Johnson said. 'When you catch a guy like that in this league it's tough sledding. We'll just try to go out and get them tomorrow.'

Looking to rebound, the Braves turn to Kris Medlen and his three-start winning streak.

The right-hander picked up a victory in Washington on Wednesday, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over seven innings while striking out six. Medlen moved to 9-10 with a 3.85 earned run average in 23 starts this season.

That victory for Medlen came after he beat the hosting Phillies on Aug. 2 despite allowing four runs over six innings. He yielded a pair of solo homers in the second inning, one to Darin Ruf, and also served up a solo shot to Chase Utley in the sixth.

The 27-year-old Medlen is 2-2 lifetime versus Philadelphia with a 5.85 ERA in 16 games (5 starts).

Ethan Martin faces the Braves for the second time in his three career starts, dropping his MLB debut to Atlanta and Medlen on Aug. 2. The righty was charged with six runs on eight hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings, striking out six but getting reached for two homers.

Both home runs off Martin came during a five-run fifth for the Braves, with Brian McCann connecting on a two-run shot and Johnson adding a solo blast.

Martin, who makes his first career road start, was able to secure his first career win on Thursday in a 12-1 rout over the Chicago Cubs. The 24-year-old allowed a run on four hits and three walks in five innings of work.

The Braves have won six of 10 versus the Phillies this year, taking two of three at home over Philadelphia to begin the season in April.
