Detroit Tigers @ San Diego Padres

Scheduled Start Time: 4:10 PM ET

Petco Park

(SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer tries for his first win of the season on Sunday when the Detroit Tigers close out a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

Scherzer has pitched well his first two times out, but has nothing to show for it, despite a stingy 1.20 ERA. He picked up his second no-decision on Tuesday in Los Angeles, as he held the Dodgers to a pair of runs and eight hits in seven innings. He also struck out eight batters and has fanned 15 over 15 innings this season.

The right-hander, of course, was 21-3 a year ago.

Scherzer has faced the Padres four times and is 1-1 against them with a 2.63 ERA.

San Diego, meanwhile, will counter with a winless pitcher of its own in righty Tyson Ross, who is 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA. Ross' latest setback came on Tuesday in Cleveland, as he allowed seven runs, although just two were earned, and five hits in 5 1/3 innings.

'That was a tough one for me,' Ross said. 'I couldn't find my rhythm and I struggled with my fastball command.'

Ross is 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in three games (1 start) versus the Tigers.

On Saturday, Justin Verlander recorded his first career major league hit and fired seven innings of two-run ball in Detroit's 6-2 win.

Verlander (1-1) was 0-for-26 in his career at the plate before picking up his first hit on a single up the middle in the second. He went 2-or-3 at the dish and struck out eight, allowed eight hits and a walk on the bump for the Tigers, who moved to 6-3 on the young campaign.

'It felt great. It's been a long time and I can finally get all these guys off my back,' Verlander said of his first hit.

Ian Kennedy (1-2) fanned seven and surrendered four runs on eight hits and a walk over six frames for San Diego, which had a brief two-game winning streak snapped.

'We had some opportunities ... we just couldn't punch anything across,' Padres manager Bud Black said.

San Diego hasn't played Detroit since the Tigers took two of three back in 2008. The Padres, though, have won just three of the last 11 in the series.
