MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927542 Ozzie Guillen MLB In 2006, the Chicago White Sox manager issued a selective "sorry" after using a derogatory term often used to describe someone's sexual orientation to describe Chicago Sun-Times columnist Jay Mariotti. Guillen apologized to gay groups for his language, but not to Mariotti. "I shouldn't have mentioned the name that was mentioned, but I'm not going to back off of Jay," Guillen said.

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927213 Steve Bartman MLB Cubs fan Steve Bartman inadvertently became a part of that franchise's sorry history when he unintentionally interfered with Chicago outfielder Moises Alou's attempt to catch a foul ball during Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS. After the Marlins rallied to win the game, Bartman issued an apology to all Cubs fans, saying he was "truly sorry from the bottom of this Cubs fan's broken heart." In retrospect, however, it's probably Cubs fans who owe Bartman an apology.

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927214 Janet Jackson MLB There have been more than a handful of sorry performances in the Super Bowl, but few have been sorrier afterward than Jackson. After her well-documented "wardrobe malfunction" during the halftime show of Super Bowl XXVIII, Jackson not only apologized, but also proclaimed her parent company to be completely innocent. "The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals," Jackson said in a statement. "MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended — including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL."

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927215 Andy Pettitte MLB If there's a blueprint for issuing apologies in the steroid era, Pettitte may very well be the architect. Two days after being named in the Mitchell Report, Pettitte admitted to using human growth hormone on two separate occasions in an attempt to come back from injury, saying: "If what I did was an error in judgment on my part, I apologize. I accept responsibility for those two days." Unlike many of his contemporaries, Pettitte has not experienced any long-term fallout from his association with PEDs. See what saying "I'm sorry" can do?

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927212 Michael Phelps MLB Setting a record with eight gold medals in a single Olympiad means never having to say you're sorry, right? Wrong. Just three months after breaking Mark Spitz's seemingly unbreakable mark at the 2008 Summer Games, Phelps was caught on film inhaling from a marijuana pipe at a University of South Carolina party. "I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment," Phelps said in the statement released by one of his agents. "I'm 23 years old and despite the successes I've had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again."

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927458 Michael Vick MLB It probably didn't matter much to animal lovers everywhere, but Vick did apologize for his role in a dogfighting enterprise. A lot. Shortly after he entered his guilty plea, Vick said he was sorry "for all the things that I've done and that I've allowed to happen." He apologized to the NFL and to the Falcons, to his teammates and to the fans. Then in closing, he said: "I want to apologize to all the young kids out there for my immature acts and, you know, what I did was, what I did was very immature, so that means I need to grow up."

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927211 Pete Rose MLB Given that Rose has made a cottage industry out of not being in Cooperstown, it seems only fitting that his apology for betting on baseball was a financially induced mea culpa. Rose finally copped a plea to betting on baseball in his 2004 autobiography "My Prison Without Bars." Two years later, another — even more appropriate — apology was unearthed. Rose had signed a case of baseballs with the inscription: "I'm sorry I bet on baseball."

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927541 Mark McGwire MLB After years of silence, Mark McGwire finally came clean about his steroid use … sort of. While admitting that he used performance-enhancing drugs for the better part of a decade — including his record-setting 1998 season — McGwire also claimed the PEDs didn't help him hit home runs and seemed to treat his steroid use as a product of the times, saying: "I wish I had never played during the steroid era."

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927540 Alex Rodriguez MLB Shortly after the Mitchell Report was released in 2007, Rodriguez made an appearance on 60 Minutes during which he unequivocally told Katie Couric he'd never taken performance-enhancing drugs. That made the 2009 revelation that he had, in fact, used steroids a little embarrassing … and led to this apology: "Back then, (baseball) was a different culture," Rodriguez said. "It was very loose. I was young. I was stupid. I was naive. And I wanted to prove to everyone that I was worth being one of the greatest players of all time. … I did take a banned substance. And for that, I am very sorry and deeply regretful."

MLB 49 43 Notable sports apologies 10927459 Kobe Bryant MLB There are probably two apologies the public remembers Bryant making to his wife, Vanessa, in the wake of his being accused of rape. One was made at a news conference: "I sit here in front of you guys, furious at myself, disgusted at myself for making the mistake of adultery. And I love my wife with all my heart." The other? It was made at a Santa Monica, Calif., jewelry boutique in the form of a $4 million, 8-carat purple diamond ring. You can decide for yourself which was more effective.

Tiger Woods isn't the first athlete to utter those words after a public transgression. His infamous public apology got us searching for some of the most notable sports apologies in recent years.
