Omar Infante (pictured)? Michael Bourn? Elvis Andrus? Not every 2010 All-Star selection inspires widespread praise, but no one from this year’s crop is dubious enough to be called one of the worst picks of all-time. Some players got in because each team, even the lowliest, must send one representative. Some were selected by enthusiastic, if not very discerning fans. Still others were sentimental favorites, based on career numbers, with total disregard for the season at hand. Here’s our list of the 10 worst All-Stars ever.

In 2006, Redman was the best pitcher on a very bad Royals team (and, yes, we know that sounds redundant).  But the rules state each club must send a representative to the All-Star Game, and so he made the team. His first-half record was 6-4 with a dreadful 5.27 ERA with just 32 strikeouts.

Varitek was elected to the team by his peers. The Red Sox catcher ended the first half of the season hitting .218, with 73 strikeouts compared with just 56 hits. In June, his batting average was an atrocious .122.

Dodgers SS Izturis was on fire early in the season, hitting .345 through June 1. But he hit .105 in June. He was named to the 2005 All-Star team, despite a .275 average with just one home run in the first half of the season. He also had 34 strikeouts and just 15 extra-base hits at the break.

Relief pitcher Mike Williams of the Pittsburgh Pirates was elected to the 2003 All-Star team despite a first-half record of 1-3, a 6.44 ERA, having given up 41 hits and 22 walks and fanning just 19 in 36 1/3 innings. He set the record for being the pitcher with the highest ERA to make an All-Star team and remains the only pitcher to play in an All-Star game with an season ERA of over 6.00.

In 1993 and 1994, Cooper was the lone Red Sox player named to the All Star team. In '93, his season average was .279 with nine home runs and 63 RBIs. In '94, his best career year, he hit .282 with 13 homers and 53 RBIs.

Utility man Mark Loretta was traded from the Padres to the Red Sox before the 2006 season. Enthusiastic Red Sox fans voted him in as the starting second baseman for the AL All-Star team. Loretta had a respectable batting average but was prone to striking out. Robinson Cano not only had a higher OPS+ (80 vs. 129), but in the first half Cano also had a higher batting average and slugging percentage.

Carter, Tampa Bay's lone representative in the 2003 All-Star Game, had a record of 5-3, with a 4.05 ERA and 15 saves with 20 strikeouts going into the break. He did not appear in the All-Star Game.
 

Pavlik was a 15-game winner for the Rangers in 1996 but had an ERA over 5.00.  He finished the year 15-8 with a 5.19 ERA. He threw two innings in the Midsummer Classic, giving up two runs, including a solo home run to Ken Caminiti.

Reigning AL Rookie of the Year Sandy Alomar had limited playing time in 1991, appearing in just 51 games. At the time of the All-Star Game, he was batting just .241 with a .287 on-base percentage and nine extra-base hits. He also had 22 strikeouts and just six walks in 141 at-bats.

It may sound like blasphemy, but the only reason Cal Ripken was voted onto the 2001 squad was because he had announced his retirement. The Iron Man hit a meager .240 with just four HRs and an OPS+ of 56 in the first half. He did hit a homer in the game, however.
