The most famous of its more than 65 players include: Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera (pictured), Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus, Indians shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, Mariners ace Felix Hernandez, Tigers designated hitter Victor Martinez, Diamondbacks catcher Miguel Montero, Tigers pitcher Anibal Sanchez, Giants infielder Marco Scutaro and Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval.

Taiwan is represented by Orioles pitcher Wei-Yin Chen (pictured), Astros outfielder Che-Hsuan Lin and free agent pitcher Chien-Ming Wang.

Reds outfielder Shin-soo Choo (pictured) will be joined in the major leagues in 2013 by countryman Hyun-jin Ryu, a rookie pitcher for the Dodgers.

Rockies pitcher Wilton Lopez (pictured), Padres shortstop Evereth Cabrera and Mariners pitcher Erasmo Ramirez hail from Nicaragua. Nicaraguan former major leaguer Vicente Padilla signed with the Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League for the 2013 season.

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius (given name: Mariekson Julius Gregorius) was born in the Netherlands. He speaks four languages: English, Dutch, Papiamentu and Spanish. His father (also called Didi), his grandfather and his brother Johnny have all pitched for Dutch teams. He lived part of his childhood in the island nation of Curaçao — a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands — and he maintains a residence there. Side note: Hall of Fame pitcher Bert Blyleven was born in the Netherlands.

Players born in Mexico include Royals pitcher Joakim Soria (pictured), Red Sox pitcher Alfredo Aceves, Orioles pitcher Luis Ayala, Dodgers infielder Luis Cruz (born in the same town as Dodger great Fernando Valenzuela), Rockies pitcher Jorge De La Rosa, Brewers pitchers Marco Estrada and Yovani Gallardo, Cardinals pitcher Jaime Garcia, Royals pitcher Luis Mendoza, Mariners pitcher Oliver Perez and Cardinals pitcher Fernando Salas. Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez was born in San Diego, Calif., but spent part of his childhood living in Tijuana, Mexico. His father was a member of the Mexican national baseball team.

Players from Japan include Rangers pitcher Yu Darvish (pictured), Brewers outfielder Norichika Aoki, Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma, Yankees pitcher Hiroki Kuroda, Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, A's rookie shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima, Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki, Cubs pitcher Hisanori Takahashi, Rangers pitcher Yoshinori Tateyama, Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa, Red Sox pitcher Koji Uehara and Orioles pitcher Tsuyoshi Wada. Japan doesn't just export players: Many major leaguers opt to move to the Land of the Rising Sun to finish out their careers.

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Justin Masterson was born in the tiny island nation of Jamaica in the capital city of Kingston, where his father was dean of students at the Jamaica Theological Seminary. The family moved to Indiana a few years later. Former major leaguers from Jamaica are: Chili Davis, Rolando Roomes and Devon White.

Seattle Mariners third baseman Alex Liddi is the first born and raised Italian major leaguer and the seventh Italian-born player. The last major leaguer born in Italy was infielder Reno Bertoia, whose career ended in 1962.

Although *technically not a foreign-born player, Cincinnati Reds right fielder Donald Lutz grew up in Germany. He was born in Watertown, N.Y. His parents met in Germany, where his mother lived and his father, Donald Lutz II, served in the U.S. Army. They divorced when Donald was eight months old, at which point his mother, Marlen, moved back to Germany with her three children. “From then on, I lived like a regular German,” says Lutz, who has dual citizenship. “We didn’t speak any English at home. I was just a regular German with an American passport. I usually just say I’m German.”
 

The Dominican Republic leads all foreign countires with at least 95 major league players. Its biggest stars include Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano (pictured), Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista, Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre, Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz, Red Sox designated hitter David Oritz, Angels first baseman Albert Pujols (who moved to the US as a teenager), Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez, Blue Jays shortstop Jose Reyes and Nationals closer Rafael Soriano.

The tiny Caribbean island nation of Curaçao is represented by three current MLB players: free agent pitcher Jair Jurrjens (pictured), Nationals outfielder Roger Bernadina, Dodgers pitcher Kenley Jansen, Rangers infielder Jurickson Profar and Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons. Former major leaguer Andruw Jones, who recently signed a deal to play in Japan was the majors' first Curaçaoan. Jurrjens, like many Curaçaoans, speaks English, Dutch and Papiamentu. He's also fluent in Spanish. Curaçao is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Cuban-born players include White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez (pictured), Padres first baseman Yonder Alonso, Royals second baseman Yuniesky Betancourt, Royals pitcher Francisley Bueno, A's outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman, Phillies pitcher Jose Contreras, Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar, Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal, Brewers pitcher Livan Hernandez, Red Sox shortstop Jose Iglesias, Rangers outfielder Leonys Martin, Mariners infielder/DH Kendrys Morales, Tigers catcher Brayan Pena, Phillies pitcher Raul Valdes and White Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo.

Colombian players include Angels relief pitcher Ernesto Frieri (pictured), White Sox pitcher Jose Quintana, Marlins infielder/outfielder Donovan Solano and his brother Nationals catcher Jhonatan Solano and Braves pitcher Julio Teheran.

Players from the Great White North include Mariners outfielder Jason Bay (pictured), Phillies pitcher Phillippe Aumont, Brewers pitcher John Axford, White Sox pitcher Jesse Crain, Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster, Twins pitcher Scott Diamond, Brewers infielder Taylor Green, Dodgers pitcher Blake Hawksworth, A's catcher George Kottaras, Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie, Pirates pitcher Chris Leroux, Pirates catcher Russell Martin, Twins first baseman Justin Morneau, Blue Jays catcher Mike Nickeas, Phillies second baseman Pete Orr, Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders and Reds first baseman Joey Votto.

Cleveland Indians infielder/catcher Yan Gomes, who first came up with the Blue Jays is the sole Brazilian in the majors. Gomes was born in Sao Paulo but moved to Miami at age 12.

Oakland Athletics pitcher Grant Balfour hails from Down Under, as do A's pitcher Travis Blackley, Twins pitcher Liam Hendriks, A's infielder Luke Hughes and Blue Jays pitcher Rich Thompson.

MLB players represent 19 countries and territories outside the United States, making it truly a worldwide sport.
