MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486833 Slowing down: B.J. Upton, Rays Slowing+down%3A+B.J.+Upton%2C+Rays MLB His name has popped up in trade rumors again. So let's ask the question: Who would want to trade for Upton now? Apart from his lackadaisical outfield play, he has been a .238 hitter with an average of more than one strikeout per game since the start of last season. And he wouldn't have impressed any rival scouts on Friday when he was picked off first base in the ninth inning of a tie game. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486886 Slowing down: Mat Latos, Padres Slowing+down%3A+Mat+Latos%2C+Padres+ MLB For weeks, there has been a tug-of-war over Latos. On one hand, he won a team-high 10 games in the first half. On the other, he's a 22-year-old with an innings limit. Now comes news that Latos won't pitch for awhile after straining a side muscle as he stopped himself from sneezing. Fans may chuckle now, but this isn't funny for the Padres. They may lose ground without him. Radar gun speed: 73 MPH J. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486885 Slowing down: A.J. Burnett, Yankees Slowing+down%3A+A.J.+Burnett%2C+Yankees+ MLB Burnett wasn't pitching well on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, and he took out his frustrations in an unacceptable way: The right-hander shoved a clubhouse door, opening up a cut below the thumb on his pitching hand. Burnett was apologetic afterward, but the incident was another sign that he isn't as reliable as he looked on occasion last October. Over his last eight starts, his ERA is 8.15. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486884 Slowing down: Kerry Wood, Indians Slowing+down%3A+Kerry+Wood%2C+Indians+ MLB Is anyone surprised to see Wood back on the disabled list? This time, a blister on his right index finger is the reason. While it's not a serious arm injury — Wood has been there, done that — the latest DL stint is yet another sign that his tenure in Cleveland has not gone according to plan. Wood has just 28 saves in two seasons, and his latest injury could complicate efforts to trade him. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486701 Slowing down: Angel Pagan, Mets Slowing+down%3A+Angel+Pagan%2C+Mets MLB Pagan is batting .306, second-best on the team behind David Wright. And yet with the return of Carlos Beltran from the disabled list, Pagan won't be in the lineup every day. Manager Jerry Manuel will need to handle the situation with care, especially if Pagan continues starting in right field (over Jeff Francoeur) against right-handed pitching, as he did over the weekend. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486832 Speeding up: Aramis Ramirez, Cubs Speeding+up%3A+Aramis+Ramirez%2C+Cubs+ MLB Ramirez battled injuries earlier this season and generally looked feeble at the plate. Now, he's hitting. Ramirez has posted a .343/.395/.714 line in 18 games since returning from the disabled list. The surge is probably too late to establish much trade value before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, and his season average is still below .220. But it's an encouraging sign for the Cubs in a season without many of them. Radar gun speed: 89 MPH Nam Y. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486830 Speeding up: Brett Myers, Astros Speeding+up%3A+Brett+Myers%2C+Astros+ MLB It won't be easy for the Astros to trade Roy Oswalt. He has a big contract, a no-trade clause, and a unique place in franchise history. Myers is a different case. He is earning $3 million this year with an $8 million option ($2 million buyout) for 2011. And he's 7-6 with a career-low 3.35 ERA — not much higher than his more famous teammate. Myers' contract doesn't include no-trade protection so he is priced to move. Radar gun speed: 92 MPH Bob Levey - Getty Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2010/07/18/071810-MLB-Gallery-SW-3_20100718120213_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2010/07/18/071810-MLB-Gallery-SW-3_20100718120213_70_70.JPG
MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486702 Speeding up: Clay Buchholz and Josh Beckett, Red Sox Speeding+up%3A+Clay+Buchholz+and+Josh+Beckett%2C+Red+Sox+ MLB It's only mid-July, but we can comfortably say that the Red Sox accomplished what they set out to do: With the returns of Buchholz and Beckett (above) imminent, the team is still in contention. Buchholz is scheduled to pitch for Boston on Wednesday; Beckett's schedule is less certain. But help is on the way for the beleaguered Boston roster. Radar gun speed: 93 MPH Kevin Rivoli - AP Images http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2010/07/18/071810-MLB-Gallery-SW-1_20100718120213_600_400.JPG http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom/img/2010/07/18/071810-MLB-Gallery-SW-1_20100718120213_70_70.JPG
MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486831 Speeding up: Carl Pavano, Twins Speeding+up%3A+Carl+Pavano%2C+Twins+ MLB So the Twins don't have Cliff Lee. At least they have Pavano, who has clearly supplanted Francisco Liriano as the team's ace for now. Pavano leads the rotation in ERA (3.48) and wins (11), following his complete-game victory over the White Sox on Saturday night. He was one of the best one-year signings in baseball last offseason. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486883 Speeding up: Brandon Phillips, Reds Speeding+up%3A+Brandon+Phillips%2C+Reds+ MLB Phillips, a first-time All-Star this year, has been a crucial force in the Reds' surprising stay atop the National League Central. As of Sunday morning, he was the NL leader in runs scored and defensive assists, which underscored his importance on both sides of the ball. At age 29, Phillips is enjoying his most consistent season as a big leaguer. MLB 49 43 Jon Paul Morosi's Radar Gun 11486975 This week's Radar Gun This+week%27s+Radar+Gun MLB Baseball has changed forever because The Boss is no longer involved. Over the weekend in New York, the Yankees played their first games since 1972 without George Steinbrenner as their principal owner. The schedule went on, uninterrupted, as is the baseball way. The focus is gradually shifting back to the American League East race, where the Yankees lead the Rays and Red Sox – but not by much.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are 0-2 in Cliff Lee's starts for the team and the surging Giants have leapfrogged other contenders in the National League West.

Here's a look at trends around the game, in our first FOX Radar Gun of the second half. -- Jon Paul Morosi
