MLB.com's 11th annual Greatness in Baseball Yearly Awards (GIBBYs) were announced on Dec. 3. Selections in 21 categories were based on voting by media, front-office personnel, MLB alumni, fans at MLB.com and the Society for American Baseball Research.

Tigers slugging third baseman Miguel Cabrera won AL MVP Award. He also won the AL Triple Crown, becoming the first player since 1967 to achieve that feat, and the AL Hank Aaron Award as the league's best offensive player. He led the AL in average/HR/RBI (.330/44/139). The Triple Crown goes to a player who leads the league in batting average, home runs and RBI. The Hank Aaron award is decided by a panel of Hall of Fame players, led by Aaron, plus fan votes. The MVP is voted on by a panel of BBWAA writers, two from each major league city.

Giants catcher Buster Posey (2010 NL Rookie of the Year) racked up the 2012 hardware. He was the overwhelming choice for NL MVP, was named the NL's Comeback Player of the Year and received the NL Hank Aaron Award as the league's best offensive player. Posey led the league with a .336 BA and was in the NL's top 10 in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, RBI, multiple-hit games, total bases, hits, doubles, walks and sacrifice flies. He missed most of the 2011 season after suffering extensive leg injuries from a gruesome home plate collision on May 25. The Comeback Player of the Year Award is voted on by the 30 MLB.com beat reporters. The Hank Aaron award is decided by a panel of Hall of Fame players, led by Aaron, plus fan votes. The MVP Award is voted on by a panel of BBWAA writers, two from each MLB city.

New York Mets starter R.A. Dickey won the NL Cy Young Award. The 38-year-old Dickey became the first pitcher who relied predominantly on a knuckleball to win the Cy Young Award, an achievement mentors such as Hall of Famer Phil Niekro are quite proud of. Dickey beat 2011 winner Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers by a wide margin in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.

Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price won the AL Cy Young Award on Nov. 14 over last year's winner Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers in one of the closest races in the history of the award. Price beat out Verlander by only four points in balloting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Runner-up two years ago, Price was the pick this time for the league's top pitching prize. Price went 20-5 to tie Jered Weaver for the American League lead in victories and winning percentage. The 27-year-old lefty had the lowest ERA at 2.56 and finished sixth in strikeouts with 205.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin was named the AL Manager of the Year. Melvin beat out Baltimore's Buck Showalter for the AL honor in a close vote by a Baseball Writers' Association of America panel. Under Melvin, the A's made a 20-game improvement, finished 94-68 and won the AL West. Melvin got 16 first-place votes. Showalter got the other 12 firsts, and Robin Ventura of the Chicago White Sox finished third. Melvin also won in 2007 with Arizona.

Davey Johnson was honored as NL Manager of the Year after guiding the Washington Nationals to the best record in the major leagues. Johnson won easily in voting by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Johnson received 23 of the 32 first-place votes, Dusty Baker of NL Central winner Cincinnati got five firsts and was second. Bruce Bochy of the World Series champion San Francisco Giants got four firsts and was third. Johnson, who turns 70 in January, was  the AL's top manager in 1997 while with Baltimore.

Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels, who turned 21 on Aug. 7, became the youngest AL Rookie of the Year ever and the eighth unanimous AL pick. The center fielder received all 28 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers' Association of America's AL panel. Trout, who hit .326 with 30 homers and 83 RBI, earns a $10,000 bonus on top of his $482,500 salary. He also won a Silver Slugger award and Baseball America's Major League Rookie and Player of The Year awards.

Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals was named the NL Rookie of the Year, receiving 16 of 32 first-place votes and 112 points from the NL panel. Harper batted .270 with 22 home runs and 59 RBI as Washington brought postseason play to the nation's capital for the first time since 1933. Harper, who turned 20 on Oct. 16, became the youngest position player in All-Star history. At 20 years, 27 days on Monday, he was 24 days older than New York Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden when he won the NL award in 1984.

The MLBPA handed out its annual Players Choice Awards on Nov. 5. Late in the regular season, players from each league nominated their peers from their respective leagues for a series of awards. The Marvin Miller Man of the Year award is given to one Major Leaguer whose "on-field performance and contributions to his community inspire others to higher levels of achievement." The Players Trust donated $20,000 to the charity of each winner's choice, and $50,000 for the Marvin Miller Man of the Year and Player of the Year recipients. The winners:

Managers and coaches from each MLB club get four votes and select the best offensive producers at each position in their league. They are not allowed to vote for players on their own team.

Each Major League manager and up to six coaches on each staff vote from a pool of qualified players in their respective league, but cannot select players from their own team.

Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is the 2012 recipient of the Roberto Clemente Award, presented annually to an MLB player for positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement. The award is named for the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while delivering supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Kershaw, 24, is the youngest player ever to receive the Clemente award. He and his wife Ellen founded Kershaw’s Challenge, an organization that benefits at-risk children and communities in need. Its cornerstone charity, Arise Africa, is building an orphanage in Lusaka, Zambia. Kershaw (pictured with his wife, Commissioner Bud Selig and Clemente's widow Vera) was selected from a list of 30 team nominees by a panel of dignitaries and fan votes.
