News: Perez, a left-hander, got the save opportunity Friday at Oakland because manager Eric Wedge didn't want to see the A's use their left-handed bats off the bench, the Tacoma News Tribune reports. Impact: The A's had lefties John Jaso and Brandon Moss on the bench, and "I didn't want to see those guys come up there," Wedge said. Expect the Mariners to play matchups in the ninth inning with Perez and Carter Capps (and possibly others) until they deem Tom Wilhelmsen ready to return to the closer role. The fact that Wedge is using a committee is probably a good sign for Wilhelmsen's chances of earning back the job.(RotoWire, )

News: Perez and not Carter Capps got the save against the A's on Friday night, pitching a scoreless ninth. He allowed one single and struck one batter out. Impact: It's interesting that manager Eric Wedge turned to Perez rather than Capps. Capps hadn't pitched since Monday (June 10), and three of the four A's hitters that Perez faced were right-handed. Meanwhile, Danny Farquhar pitched the eighth inning.(RotoWire, )

News: Manager Eric Wedge said Perez and Carter Capps will temporarily be used as co-closers for the Mariners on a matchup basis, the Tacoma News Tribune reports. Impact: Wedge elected to give the scuffling Tom Wilhelmsen a break from ninth-inning duties after his five-run implosion Wednesday against the Astros, but unless his struggles persist in middle relief, he's expected to reclaim the closing gig in the near future. In his stead, Perez figures to be used in the ninth against left-handed heavy lineups while Capps will see most of his appearances against lineups with a higher proportion of right-handed batters.(RotoWire, )
