News: San Diego Padres and second baseman Jedd Gyorko have agreed to a six-year contract that adds $35 million over five seasons through 2019. Gyorko's agreement, which replaces a one-year deal agreed to last month, includes a team option for 2020. San Diego essentially buys out one year of free agency and possibly two. Impact: Gyorko proved himself with a big rookie season, hitting .249 with 23 home runs and 63 RBIs. His previous deal called for $510,900 this year in the major leagues and $294,000 in the minors. The new contract eliminates the lower minor league pay and adds salaries $2 million in 2015, $4 million in 2016, $6 million in 2017, $9 million in 2018 and $13 million in 2019. San Diego's 2020 club option is at $13 million with a $1 million buyout. The buyout can escalate by up to $750,000 based on achievements.(STATS, 5:31pm)

News: Gyorko agreed to a six-year extension with the Padres on Monday, Keith Law of reports. Impact: The deal will wrap Gyorko up through his prime arbitration years, just as he's starting to show signs of life this season. In the recent weekend series versus the Tigers, the second baseman notched a hit in each one, including a homer and triple apiece, to go with three RBI and two runs scored in 11 at-bats.(RotoWire, )

News: Gyorko remains embroiled in a slump, going a combined 0-for-7 with one walk and one strikeout during Wednesday's doubleheader at Cleveland. Impact: Other than a pair of two-hit performances through the Padres' first nine outings, Gyorko has been blanked at the plate in 24 at-bats. The sorry state of the San Diego offense has supplied nary an opportunity to drive in runs, but after tallying one homer in every 21.1 at-bats during an overall impressive rookie campaign, he has yet to go yard in 2014. Additionally, his plate discipline isn't much different than a year ago -- 12 strikeouts in 32 at-bats (37.5 percent), versus a 25.3 percent strikeout rate last season -- but as a second baseman, it's difficult to seek out other respectable candidates to fill the position while he works out the kinks.(RotoWire, )
