| News: Tigers manager Jim Leyland said he will use Benoit, Jose Valverde and Phil Coke to "mix-and-match" at closer going forward, the Detroit Free Press reports. | Impact: Benoit and Valverde figure to be the top two options in the newly formed committee. While Benoit is the better pitcher of the two, Leyland has always preferred to use him in a setup role where he could be deployed for longer than one inning. Benoit is currently worth a flier right now, the Tigers may eventually try to find a long-term solution at closer to keep Benoit available for his usual setup role.(RotoWire, ) |

| News: Tigers manager Jim Leyland wouldn't commit to Benoit being the top option to close games going forward, the Detroit Free Press reports. "I'm going to do whatever I think it takes (for) the Tigers win the game, and today I felt like my best option Benoit," said Leyland. "That doesn't mean that Papa Grande (Jose Valverde) isn't going to close games. That does''t mean Benoit is the closer. All it means is that today I felt Benoit was my best option because of the type of hitters they had coming up." | Impact: Benoit picked up his fourth save of the season and second of the month in Sunday's win against the Twins. Meanwhile, Valverde has blown two of his past five save chances and sports a 9.95 ERA over his past seven appearances. Leyland appears ready to determine his closer based on matchups until Valverde or Benoit distance themselves from the other. Both players are worth stashing until the closing situation in Detroit becomes more concrete.(RotoWire, ) |
