News: Valverde gave up a pair of home runs in a non-save situation while pitching the ninth inning Wednesday against Arizona. Impact: After reeling off five straight frames without allowing an earned run to begin the season, Valverde has scuffled in each of his last two appearances with three home runs allowed during that span. His hold on the closer's role for the Mets is shaky, and it may be worth speculating on the alternatives at manager Terry Collins' disposal.(RotoWire, )

News: Valverde blew up in spectacular fashion Saturday, allowing a three-run home run to Raul Ibanez to tie the game. Impact: After retiring the first two hitters, Valverde surrendered a single to David Freese and then walked Erick Aybar. On a 1-0 count, Ibanez golfed a low fastball over the fence in left, bringing back memories of what Ibanez did to El Papa Grande when he was a member of the Yankees and Valverde was on the Tigers. Valverde is still fairly secure in his role of Mets closer, but have the antacids ready every time he takes the hill in the ninth inning.(RotoWire, )

News: Valverde retired all three batters he faced Thursday to earn his second save of the season. Impact: So far so good for Valverde, who doesn't have a lot of competition for the closer role. He's likely to make things interesting from time to time, but as long as he can pitch reasonably well, Valverde's got a good shot at hanging onto the job for a good chunk of the season.(RotoWire, )

News: Valverde is in line to remain the Mets' closer with Bobby Parnell slated to undergo Tommy John surgery, the team's official site reports. Impact: Valverde, who converted his only save opportunity since taking over for Parnell, is thus in line to close for the Mets for the foreseeable future. The report suggests that if Valverde struggles down the road, the Mets could look at some in-house options in the minors (such as Rafael Montero and Jacob DeGrom) to bolster their bullpen or perhaps bring in a free agent, with Ryan Madson, Kevin Gregg and Joel Hanrahan mentioned as possible options on that front.(RotoWire, )

News: Valverde notched his first save since stepping in for the injured Bobby Parnell, tossing a scoreless inning in the Mets 4-3 win over Cincinnati on Friday night. Impact: It wasn't without a little classic Valverde - he allowed a hit and a walk while registering one strikeout before ending it. The Mets won't know how long Parnell will be out for at least a couple of weeks, and it could be for as much as the entire season. It is likely to mean frequent edge-of-your-seat save chances, but Valverde is a must own for the foreseeable future in virtually all fantasy formats.(RotoWire, )

News: Mets manager Terry Collins confirmed that Valverde will close "for now," Adam Rubin of reports. Impact: It was widely assumed that Valverde, who has notched 286 career saves in the majors, would take the reins after Bobby Parnell went down with an elbow injury, and Collins confirmed as much Wednesday afternoon. Parnell is hoping to avoid Tommy John surgery, but an extended absence could be in the cards. While the Mets don't currently have many late-inning arm that can push Valverde for the job, Vic Black could be an option down the road.(RotoWire, )
