News: Hughes (right index finder) says his fingernail has healed, and it will not be a problem for him in his start Sunday at Kansas City, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Impact: Hughes is striking out an impressive 10.2 batters per nine innings pitched this season but also has a 7.20 ERA. His FIP is 3.87, however, so there has been a good deal of bad luck contributing to his inflated ERA.(RotoWire, )

News: Hughes developed an issue with the fingernail on his right index finger during Tuesday's start which limited the use of his curveball, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. "I always cut my nail before a start," Hughes said. "If my index fingernail gets too long, I can't spike the curveball. I have to make sure it's pretty short. I just cut it too short, and the skin just peeled back a little bit on the other side of it. It didn't spring up until the fifth inning." Impact: Hughes threw five scoreless innings in the game and then gave up four consecutive hits in the sixth inning. Hughes downplayed the issue, saying he probably wouldn't have used his curveball as much in the sixth inning even if there was no issue, but the health of his finger is something to watch ahead of his next start.(RotoWire, )

News: Hughes gave up four earned runs on eight hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in five innings Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Impact: Hughes was in the midst of a very impressive outing, tossing five shutout innings before giving up four runs and failing to record an out in the sixth inning. Looking dominant at times is not something Hughes is unaccustomed to, but he's also well-versed in unraveling and giving up a big inning. There was a lot to like here, but it would be hard to convince Hughes' owners of this fact. He has now give up exactly four runs in exactly five innings in his first three starts of the season, good for a 7.20 ERA. He pitches again Sunday in Kansas City against phenom Yordano Ventura.(RotoWire, )
