Pitching
Hendrickson often is measured against Randy Johnson because they are both tall, thin and lefthanded, but that is where the comparisons should stop. Whereas Johnson is a hard-thrower who racks up strikeouts, Hendrickson is more of a finesse type, mixing a fastball that usually sits in the high 80s with a decent changeup, curveball and a cutter that he can run in on batters. Hendrickson has gotten better, but righthanded batters still give him trouble. Hendrickson sometimes gets too concerned about throwing strikes, and in an effort to get ahead in the count gets hit hard on first pitches. The Rays have tried, with mixed results, to get him to be more aggressive outside the strike zone and move the ball around.
Defense
The former NBA forward is a relatively good athlete and fields his position better than one would expect for someone his size. He is agile and has good hands, though he occasionally leaves himself in awkward fielding positions. Hendrickson is working on getting better control of the running game, reducing the number of bases stolen against him from 20 in 2003 to 11.
