Scouting Report by Stats Inc.
Pitching
Hermanson was drafted by San Diego as a closer who could throw in the high 90-MPH range. However, the Padres already had a closer, Trevor Hoffman, and Hermanson was dealt to the Expos via the Marlins. He was quickly converted to a starter by then-Expos manager Felipe Alou. Hermanson doesn't have the velocity he once had, but he can still throw in the mid-90s. With no need to pace himself after moving from the rotation, Hermanson was able to throw as hard as he could. He also used an effective slider while closing. Hermanson might not have the repertoire of other pitchers, but he's a competitor who isn't afraid to throw any pitch at any time.
Defense & Hitting
Hermanson did not make an error last season and doesn't hinder the team's defense when he's on the mound. He is paid to pitch, not hit. Although he's a good athlete, he had just three hits in 30 at-bats last season, and is an .093 career batter. Two of his 30 career hits are home runs, however.
