Sure they lost eight in a row late in the season, a year in which they won a club-record 102 games, but don’t read too much into that. Charlie Manuel’s group protected the integrity of the game on Wednesday night by knocking the Braves from postseason contention in extra innings, well after Philly had locked up home-field advantage for the playoffs. Oh, and good luck winning against Roy Halladay (19-6, 2.35 ERA), Cliff Lee (17-8, 2.40 ERA) and Cole Hamels (14-9, 2.79 ERA).

Sure, New York heads into October baseball having lost four in a row and comes face-to-face with a team that was 45-24 in the second half. New York, however, hasn’t been putting its full squad out there after locking up the division, and Justin Verlander sports non-Justin Verlander numbers (4-3, 3.97 ERA) against the Yankees in his career. Doug Fister, despite pitching lights out since donning a Tigers uniform, has a 6.00 ERA in three career starts against the Bombers. He also has no postseason experience. For a team that hit the most home runs in the bigs in 2011 as the Yankees have, Detroit won’t be able to afford many mistakes, especially not to MVP candidate Curtis Granderson, who hit a career high 41 home runs and led the league in RBI with 119.

As long as they play Texas Rangers-baseball — that is, mashing the ball — the majors’ best offense in terms of average will be able to handle the great pitching that remains. The question for Texas is its suspect rotation, which might be passable in a five-game series but could struggle in the ALCS and beyond. After C.J. Wilson, the Rangers’ staff appears loaded with third and fourth starters and lacks that crucial No. 2 guy usually necessary to win it all. But it may not matter if they score seven or more runs, which they did in 16 of 25 September games. And Mike Napoli might single-handedly provide these seven runs each night. The catcher hit .429 and had an outrageous OPS of 1.367 in September.

Oh, Detroit. Sporting streaks of seven games for season-highs in both wins and losses, the Tigers were the definition of a hot-and-cold team in 2011. Suddenly, however, they became the hottest team in the league in August and September, compiling a 38-16 record over the past two months. And what’s not to like? Justin Verlander is making us deeply consider naming a pitcher as MVP, the offense has come on and Jose Valverde didn’t blow a save all year. The big concern? Detroit’s pitching rotation has a career postseason record of 4-4. And three of those wins came from — gulp — Brad Penny.

We must be crazy, or we must look at the fact the Cardinals scored the most runs in the NL this season and had one of the best starting rotations in all of baseball during September (10-2, 2.80 ERA). Matt Holliday’s hand injury could hamper the Redbirds’ chances, but don’t count out what his replacement Allan Craig has done for this team down the stretch (.327, 5 HR, 12 RBI in 52 September at bats). Oh and it’s worth nothing, the Cardinals took the season series against the Phillies 6-3.

You’d be out of your mind to bet against the Rays right now. After perhaps the most unprecedented and impressive September comeback in major league history, the St. Pete mojo is rising and Evan Longoria might be rewriting the definition of the word “clutch.” Having said that, the “little team that could” might run out of steam against the teams that built themselves for postseason runs. And don’t forget: David Price pitched on Wednesday night and got lit up in a game in which James Shields was warming up in the bullpen in extra innings. Nobody would be surprised to see Tampa Bay pull off another upset, but nobody would be surprised if they didn’t, either.

It’s really not fair to rank the Brewers this low. Anytime you can roll out Yovani Gallardo (17-10, 3.52 ERA), Zack Greinke (16-6, 3.83) and Shaun Marcum (13-7, 3.54) at the front of your rotation and Francisco Rodriguez (4-0, 17 holds, 1.86 ERA with Milw

Not to mention, opposing pitchers get to deal with Prince Fielder (.299, 38 HR, 120 RBI) and Ryan Braun (.332, 33 HR, 111 RBI). The biggest question is can the Brewers regain the magic of August when they were an amazing 21-7 and built a double-digit lead in the NL Central? If so, they will be playing late into these playoffs.

Putz enters a game, the Diamondbacks win. Since June 29, the D-backs are a perfect 26-0 in games which Putz pitches, and the right-hander has converted 24 straight opportunities while posting a 0.77 ERA during that span. If the Brewers want to get to this team, they better do it early, because Putz and Co. do not give up too many leads.
