They won the belt and title a season ago, and over the winter they upgraded the rotation and added Curtis Granderson. On the downside, the Yankees are an unusually old team at a number of key spots. If age-related decline sets in, they could finish in third place in the devastatingly tough AL East. CC Sabathia flirted with a no-no, but Mark Teixeira is struggling badly in the early going. Still, winning four of six in Boston and Tampa Bay is a fine way to start the season. Collapse Description

To paraphrase Dennis Green, Roy Halladay is who we thought he was. The Phillies' new ace in town has an ERA of 0.56 on the young season, and on Sunday he notched his 150th career win and 50th career complete game. Number-two man Cole Hamels was solid enough in his first start, and he remains a strong bounceback candidate this season. Philly already boasts a +28 run differential. They'll play three more against the Nats, and then the schedule gets substantially tougher. And now they have some injury concerns. Collapse Description

The Cards, serious threats to win it all this season, opened the season by winning four of six on the road against fringe contenders and then shut out the Astros in the home opener. Not bad. What's even better is that Colby Rasmus is off to a magma-hot start. If you saw his mammoth home run on Saturday, then you saw why there's a scouting refrain that goes, "the ball jumps off his bat." As well, his patience at the plate has been outstanding thus far. Closer Ryan Franklin, though, continues to live perilously, and ace Chris Carpenter has an ERA of 5.73 on the young season. The Boston media is already wringing hands over David Ortiz and his struggles. He didn't hit this spring and isn't hitting thus far in the regular season. His age and body type lend themselves to rapid decline, but it's far too early to make any judgments. At the very least, though, the Sox need to platoon him with Mike Lowell. Evan Longoria's already hitting like the MVP candidate that he is, but the bullpen is toting around a 6.75 ERA. The Rays' next 10 come on the road. Last season, they were 17 games below .500 away from home. Obviously, that needs to change.

If we hadn't already invoked the wisdom of Dennis Green, we would do so now. That is: We knew the M's were going to have trouble pushing runs across. You can stockpile all the slick fielders you want, but no less than half the game is about offense.
