2009 WORLD SERIES: YANKEES - PHILLES

PHILADELPHIA - Since their season ended, the Red Sox have lost assistant general manager Jed Hoyer and bench coach Brad Mills to other organizations.

And the exodus may not be finished.

According to Baseball sources, Hoyer, who was named general manager of the San Diego Padres last week, is attempting to lure Red Sox director of player development Mike Hazen to become San Diego's assistant general manager.

Sources indicate that Hazen will make a decision sometime this week. He was unavailable for comment yesterday.

When Hoyer left for San Diego, the Red Sox announced they would not fill his position per se.

Ben Cherington, who together with Hoyer served as co-GM when Theo Epstein left in a dispute for six weeks following the 2005 season, was to continue serving as Epstein's top assistant.

It's unclear whether the Sox could retain Hazen by elevating him to assistant GM.

Hazen, a native of Abington, played two seasons in the Padres minor league system. With the Red Sox , he has overseen a bountiful minor league system that has produced a handful of everyday position players and top young pitchers.

The Padres system, by contrast, is ranked as one of the worst in the game. Grady Fuson, who had been in charge of the system after stints with Oakland and Texas, was fired last week when the team hired Hoyer.
