(Sports Network) - Coming into the season the Royals were expected to be a contender for the AL Central title, but terrible pitching has Kansas City primed for a last place finish instead. However, rookie phenom Zack Greinke has not only give the club hope for a turn around this season, but he has shown signs of brilliance that may give the Royals what they have been lacking for years, an ace pitcher. Greinke, who is the youngest active player in the majors at 20 years old, has made five starts in his first year with the Royals , going 1-2 with a miniscule 2.73 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. Opponents are batting just .215 against the crafty righthander this season. He has also walked just six batters (one intentional) with 14 strikeouts in 33 innings of work.

"This kid is going to be a great, great, great pitcher," manager Tony Pena said to the Kansas City Star about the young phenom.

Greinke's success is not all that of a surprise, as he was Kansas City's first round pick (sixth overall) in the 2002 draft. However, his composure and early success in the majors has surprised many.

"I've caught some guys in the past that have trouble and I've got to really help them but with this kid, he's got his own ideas of how to go and that's pretty good," catcher Benito Santiago about Greinke's composure and maturity.

Although Greinke may appears to be a finesse pitcher, he can still bring the heat. Not only has his fastball touched 94 mph on the radar this season, but his slider as well.

"He's got two different kinds of curveballs, a hard slider, two different speeds on his changeup, adds and subtracts on his fastball and he locates them all," Royals ' pitching coach John Cumberland said.

While Greinke, who set a Royals franchise record for fewest runs allowed (five) in his first four big league starts, may not be able to single-handedly turnaround Kansas City this season he does give them hope for a win every time out. He also give Kansas City its first legit starter since David Cone .

WHO'S HOT

Jeremy Affeldt has five saves and a win in his last six appearances. He has allowed just three earned runs over that span.

Santiago has a five game hitting streak and is 7-for-17 with six RBI over that time.

WHO'S NOT

Carlos Beltran has just three hits in his last 26 plate appearances.

Desi Relaford is 1-for-25 over his last nine contests.

COMING UP

After the Royals conclude a three game set with the Braves in Atlanta, they will travel to Philadelphia for three straight contests with the Phillies .
