--RHP D.J. Carrasco, as well as manager Ozzie Guillen, were under the impression that the reliever was out of options and were concerned with the upcoming roster move to bring up RHP Bobby Jenks. But the organization has informed both that Carrasco does have an option left, and the reliever was shipped to Class AAA Charlotte to clear a roster spot for Jenks. Carrasco made just one appearance, but it was huge, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just a run.
--RHP Jose Contreras is now 1-3 with an 8.60 ERA over his last seven starts. Not only is that the reason the Sox reshuffled the rotation and moved him into the No. 5 spot, but it's also the reason Contreras himself is concerned. The frustrating part for the veteran is that he feels great physically, but he just isn't performing well as of late. "I haven't felt good (about myself) at all," Contreras said of his recent slide. "The last two months I haven't been able to help my team at all."
--3B Joe Crede and OF Carlos Quentin played in the All-Star Game, with Quentin getting significantly more action in the extra-inning affair. But manager Ozzie Guillen said he expected both to be well rested and didn't foresee any reason to give them extra rest this weekend.
--RHP Esteban Loaiza threw two shutout innings Thursday in a rehab start for Class AA Birmingham. He has been on the 15-day disabled list since mid-June with an inflamed right shoulder.
BY THE NUMBERS: 85 -- Days the Sox had been in first place this season, through July 13. That's a far cry from last year, when they led the division for one day.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "We're not going to run away with this thing, I don't think so. I hope we do. That would be nice, but it's not easy. We're in a very tough division, competing against tough clubs. But we're going to be complete. The big thing about it is keeping people healthy. And get the players strong enough mentally to overcome these situations." -- Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, on what it will take in the second half for his team to hold the division lead.
