--RHP Rick Porcello won't pitch again until after the All-Star break, manager Jim Leyland announced Monday, and the way his pitching could line up it might mean the 20-year-old won't start until a makeup doubleheader with the Chicago White Sox on July 24. "We always said all along we were going to pick our spots to protect him," Leyland said. "It has nothing to do with (Sunday's poor) performance, I can tell you that... To be honest with you, I'm sure he doesn't like it, but it's what we're going to do to protect him." Detroit is not scheduled to play Thursday, so one of its pitchers would be passed over anyway. And the club also isn't scheduled to play on July 20. Leyland has scheduled RHP Edwin Jackson, RHP Armando Galarraga and RHP Justin Verlander for Cleveland this weekend. Porcello retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced Sunday at Minnesota but the next eight reached base, six of them scoring. He's 2-3 with a 5.09 ERA for his last seven starts. "The past two games are something that I can't let continue to happen," Porcello said. "So, I'll make some adjustments and come out firing next time. I just can't allow that to happen. I need to do a better job of putting a big hit behind me."
--RF Magglio Ordonez auctioned off the hair he had cut off June 24 and it sold on eBay for $6,100. Included in the deal was use of Ordonez's private box at Comerica Park for Detroit's Sept. 15 game with Kansas City plus an autographed bat. Bidding ended Saturday night. The money will be given to Imerman Angels, a charity that connects cancer survivors with cancer patients and also networks caregivers.BY THE NUMBERS: 5.09 -- Rookie RHP Rick Porcello's ERA for his past seven starts, in which he's posted a 2-3 record. He has lasted six innings or more just once in those seven outings.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's been scuffling, so that was a big hit for him. He's really been wanting to help the team." -- Detroit UT Ryan Raburn on RF Magglio Ordonez after the slumping outfielder cracked a three-run home run Saturday in a 4-3 Tigers' loss to the Minnesota Twins.
