--RHP Braden Looper did not have his $6.5 million option for 2010 exercised by the Brewers. Instead, the club paid Looper a $1 million buyout and will use the money saved to pursue other pitchers. Looper was 14-7 last season and led the Brewers with 194 2/3 innings pitched but also posted a 5.22 ERA and surrendered 39 homers, most in the majors. The option was mutual, so if the Brewers exercised their half, Looper would have had three days to do likewise. GM Doug Melvin said he might revisit signing Looper later in the offseason, but that appears unlikely.

--C George Kottaras was claimed off waivers from Boston by the Brewers. Kottaras, 36, played in 45 games for the Red Sox in 2009, batting .237 with one homer and 10 RBIs. GM Doug Melvin said Kottaras was claimed to add depth at that position entering spring camp.

--3B Casey McGehee finished fifth in the voting for NL Rookie of the Year. McGehee flew under the radar after spending the first six weeks of the season on the Brewers' bench, but he eventually saw regular action and was very productive, batting .301 with 16 home runs and 66 RBIs in 116 games.

--OF Lorenzo Cain was added to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft in December. Cain, 23, missed much of the 2009 season after suffering a knee injury. In three levels from rookie ball to Class AA, he batted .218 with four homers and 19 RBIs in 60 games. Cain was sent to the Arizona Fall League to try to recoup some of those lost at-bats.

--RHP Amaury Rivas was added to the 40-man roster to protect him from the Rule 5 draft. Rivas, 23, was the Brewers' minor league pitcher of the year after compiling a 13-7 record with a 2.98 ERA at high Class A Brevard County.

--INF Craig Counsell, a Milwaukee native, would like to stay home and return to the Brewers in 2010. But the bidding could be stiff because one report indicated a dozen clubs are expressing interest in Counsell, a versatile veteran who can play third, short and second.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Catchers on the Brewers' 40-man roster after George Kottaras was claimed off waivers from Boston. The others are Mike Rivera and Angel Salome.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I wasn't expecting to win by any stretch, but it doesn't change the fact that I had a good year. I do feel like there could have been an argument for me." -- 3B Casey McGehee, who finished fifth in the balloting for NL Rookie of the Year.
