San Diego Padres Inside Pitch

And if they are trying to acquire the 37-year-old outfielder, would they try to negotiate away the option year on Giles contract?
If Giles is traded, his salary would rise from $9 million to $11 million this season and his club option for 2009 would go from $9 million to $11 million with a $3 million buyout.
Boston is among the no-trade clubs in Giles' contract, meaning the Padres would have to reach some kind of agreement with Giles, whom they recently talked with about picking up his option for 2009.
A trade would net Giles, a San Diego County native who has made it clear he'd like to complete his career with the Padres, more money. And the Padres could still re-sign him for 2009 if any club acquiring Giles doesn't pick up his option.
Clearly, however, the Padres are interested in shedding salary. Giles is still due $2.6 million of his $9 million salary and would be due $4.6 million were he traded. Which team would pick up the additional $2 million?
METS 5, PADRES 3: David Wright golfed a two-run homer off former Met Heath Bell with two outs in the ninth inning to give the hosts a 2-1 series win. Jody Gerut had tied the game in the top of the ninth with his third homer in three games against the Mets.
