The New York Yankees, adding a possible alternative for their starting rotation, have signed free-agent right-hander Sidney Ponson to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.
Ponson, 31, recently was released by the Texas Rangers, who cited his off-field conduct in announcing their initial decision to designate him for assignment.
Ponson, however, pitched well for the Rangers, going 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts. This will be his second stint with the Yankees, for whom he was 0-1 with a 10.47 ERA in five appearances in 2006.
The Yankees' No. 1 starter, right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, is expected to be out until September after injuring his right foot last weekend.
