The Yankees aren't about to go quietly in the AL East.

New York has acquired catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers in exchange for reliever Kyle Farnsworth.

The deal, first reported by ESPN.com, will give the Yankees a complement to Jose Molina, and likely jeopardize the roster spot of Chad Moeller.

"You have to give up to get," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "You have to do the balancing act."

Tigers president Dave Dombrowski said the team didn't want to trade Rodriguez, but had bigger needs in the bullpen. The two teams began discussing the deal early Wednesday and had it wrapped up about six hours later, just as the Yankees were finishing off a 13-3 win over the Orioles.

"It's going to be very exciting. They are in the race and I'm ready to do my job," Rodriguez said.

The Yankees expect Rodriguez to join the team on Thursday, when they start a four-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

"First let me say that Pudge has done an outstanding job for us," Dombrowski told reporters before Detroit played the Cleveland Indians. "I'm sure he was very surprised by this, but for him this is a good situation. He's going to New York City, and they are in contention."

The 36-year-old Rodriguez, who has won the Gold Glove award 13 times, was hitting .295 with five homers in 82 games this season.

The Yankees have wanted a catcher ever since losing Jorge Posada to a season-ending shoulder injury.

Brandon Inge likely will take over the position full-time for the Tigers.

The trade was made possible, in part, by the Yankees' acquisition of left-handed reliever Damaso Marte from the Pirates in a six-player deal last Friday night. That gave the Yankees the depth to trade Farnsworth, who — like Rodriguez — is a free agent at the end of the season.

"Pudge had a no-trade clause and he waived it today to go to New York," Rodriguez's agent, Scott Boras, told The Associated Press on Wednesday afternoon. "Pudge has always wanted to play in New York and Detroit felt it needed a relief pitcher, so both sides were able to get what they wanted to some degree."

At 59-48, the Yankees are four games out of first place, trailing both the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox. The team has been beset by injuries this season, with Posada, outfielder Hideki Matsui, outfielder Johnny Damon, third baseman Alex Rodriguez and pitchers Chien-Ming Wang and Phil Hughes among the key players that have missed extensive time.

Farnsworth, an inconsistent part of the Yankees' bullpen for the past three seasons, was 1-2 with a 3.65 ERA in 45 games for New York. He joins a bullpen badly in need of reinforcements, three days after veteran Todd Jones was removed from the closer role in Detroit.

"It's always hard, no matter what," Farnsworth said in the Yankees' clubhouse. "Just one of those things you have to deal with."

Fernando Rodney, who has one career save, is the new closer. He came in Tuesday night in a non-save situation and gave up a run in the ninth.

Dombrowski said it would be up to manager Jim Leyland to decide where to slot Farnsworth in the bullpen, and said Brandon Inge would take over at catcher.

"We think Brandon Inge can do a fine job at catcher and at the same time we've done some repair to our bullpen," Dombrowski said.

Inge said he was excited to be getting a chance to start behind the plate on an everyday basis for the first time since 2003, when he started 98 times at catcher. Since then, he's gotten most of his starts at third base.

"I wanna play every day no matter what position, so I'm pumped," he said. "Did I learn a lot from Pudge? He's a future Hall of Famer, so watching him makes everybody better. I'm not Pudge, I'll just go out and do what I can."

Tigers slugger Gary Sheffield said the trade made sense to both sides.

"This is a surprise to people if they don't know the situations of the players," he said. "Both teams get better by this, and that's what a trade is supposed to be all about."

Rodriguez appeared in the Tigers' completely empty dugout hours before the game and waved over to Indians players, who were taking batting practice. He then disappeared back into the tunnel.

"You talk about a Hall of Fame catcher coming in here," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "He's been hot, so I'm looking forward to him being here."

Rodriguez will be remembered in Detroit for being the star who sparked the franchise's turnaround when nobody wanted to be a Tiger — at any price.

He signed a $40 million, four-year deal with them after they lost an AL-record 119 games in 2003. He had just helped Florida win the World Series, earning the MVP award in the NLCS against the Chicago Cubs.

In 2006, Rodriguez and the Tigers reached the World Series.

The player known as Pudge was an All-Star in each of his first four seasons with the Tigers, earning a spot in baseball's midsummer classic last year for the 14th time. He also won three more Gold Gloves — giving him a record 13 as a catcher.

Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and Rodriguez are the only three players in baseball history with at least 12 Gold Gloves and a career .300 average or better.

Rodriguez has caught 2,142 games, trailing only Carlton Fisk (2,226) and Bob Boone (2,225) in terms of longevity behind the plate. He has said he wants to play next season and beyond.

Best trade in a long time by front office. Pudge is a class act & proven winner. He plays hard & wants to win ala Pete Rose type heart.

This is a Matt Millen move here. Dave and Matt must have talked this deal over. I can't believe this trade. If you wanted to make the Tigers better they should have gotten rid of Sheff, Renteria and Jones. What a bone-head move. Just wasting Inge's talent in the field.

If anything Farnsworth was underrated this year.

Pudge is a great addition to any team, I love Pudge. He was my favorite player the decade he was with Texas. Great hustle, 100% every play. Future Hall of Famer for sure.

Every Yankee fan has to be happy with this trade. Pudge is obviously on the decline but anything would be better than watching Molina hit.

Farnsworth was horribly over-rated and over payed like most players. I would have traded him for a pack of cigerettes just to unload him .

Mr. Cashman, well done!! Just when you think he is going nuts a trade like this comes along. No disrespect to Posada, he has been Thurman Munson of the New Era Yankees, but Pudge has got a great bat and an arm as good as if not better than Molina. Farnsworth at least in my opinion just doesn't seem to have the fire in his gut needed to be a set up/closer in the Bronx. Oh, and one more Puerto Rican playing in pin stripes can never hurt either!! Go Yankees!

I hate to see Farnsworth go because he has been fairly reliable this year and let's face it, REALLY good relievers are REALLY hard to find. Comfortable when he came in a game? The ONLY time I feel comfortable when ANY relief pitcher comes in the game is when they play "ENTER SANDMAN" and then only if it is a save situation.
As for Pudge... If he can do FOR the Yankees, what he did AGAINST the Yankees back in '03... Let's go!!!!! We won't need him when Jorge comes back, but until that time he could be very valuable. Not the power, but he hits for a pretty good average, and has a history of hitting in the clutch, which without Matsui the Yankees have been sadly lacking.
Off subject just alittle, a message to ARod...
When there are men on base, and especially in scoring position, we just need a hit. Don't try to put it into orbit. We just need a base hit. This goes for Giambi, Jeter, Bobby, and everyone else, also. Right now about the only we can count on is Johnny Damon.
DON'T TRY TO DO TOO MUCH!

GO YANKEES!!!!!

This year I felt pretty comfortable when he took the ball. Especially of late. Yeah, he let up two runs in Boston. That doesn't mean I'm gonna crap all over the guy when he hadn't allowed a run for over a month before that.

Winning > Trade value

When he closed for the Cubs a few years ago he walked the bases loaded then walked in 2 runs, Cards won !

Isnt this the same guy while closing for the Braves gave up 6 runs to the Astros in the 9th inning of a playoff game that ended up sending the Atlanta home for the winter?Guess his relationship with Bobby Cox wasnt that great either. You're getting paid millions to get 3 stinkin outs 3 or 4 times a week.History says he will fail more times than not

Farnsworth has talent and a heater of close to 100mph...he's capable of being a solid reliever...Farnsworth complained about his relationship with Torre and felt that Girardi would be a new beginning for him and for the most part it was...the Tigers got good compensation for Pudge...
