Right-hander Livan Hernandez is now a member of the Rockies.

Hernandez, designated for assignment by the Twins, was claimed off waivers by the Rockies on Tuesday, according to major-league sources. The Twins agreed to let him go on Wednesday.

In 28 the innings he's pitched at Coors Field since 2005, Hernandez has a 3.54 ERA.

The Rockies will pay the approximately $1.6 million remaining on Hernandez's contract for the year. Minnesota is responsible for the incentives Hernandez has already earned this season, which total about $1.5 million. Had the Twins simply released Hernandez, they would have been on the hook for the $1.6 million remaining on his contract, so the move saves Minnesota about $100,000.

At least one other National League club also claimed Hernandez, sources said. The Rockies were awarded the pitcher because they had the worst record of any of the claiming teams.

The defending NL champion Rockies need a pitching boost as they attempt to rally from an eight-game deficit in the NL West. They have been scrambling to fill the back of their rotation all season, and their 4.81 team ERA is third worst in the majors.

Hernandez, 33, was 10-8 with a 5.48 ERA for Minnesota. He won six of his first seven starts but has struggled in recent months, allowing five runs or more in eight of his last 13 starts. Opponents are hitting .341 against him, highest in baseball against a qualifying pitcher. He has a 6.50 career ERA in 13 starts at Coors Field.

The Twins signed Hernandez in February to help fill the void left by the trade of ace Johan Santana, free-agent departure of right-hander Carlos Silva and uncertain status of Francisco Liriano, who was recovering from Tommy John surgery.

After a strong showing in Triple-A, Liriano recently was called up to replace Hernandez in the Twins' rotation.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

"Had the Twins simply released Hernandez, they would have been on the hook for the $1.6 million remaining on his contract, so the move saves Minnesota about $100,000."<br />That's interesting. If they release him they don't have to pay the "the incentives has already earned this season, which total about $1.5 million."

Blue jays need pitching? They have the 2nd best ERA in all of baseball. All jays needed this year was 2 real good bats and they wouldve made a lot of noise. Too bad you guys have a GM like Billy beane who doesnt seem to care about anything but appearing to be a genius. How many years are the A's going to "rebuild for next year" before the quack gets the boot? Im not a jays fan, but it's a shame to let such good pitching go to waste because the GM and/or owner dont want to get just 2 good bats there

To bad my Blue Jays couldn't pick him up. They could use some pitching right about now.

I'm sure brewsterT meant to say "humidor" instead of "humidifier" in the first message, considering that humidity makes hit balls travel farther.

The censored part is "gimme". Fox needs to lighten the reigns a bit.

I'm not sure how anyone thinks the Rockies "bolstered" their rotation by adding Livan, and I have been watching Livan and admiring his pitching for years now. It's just that his arm is becoming tired and further, how much of a gimme was this for the Twins? Choosing Liriano over Livan? Total no-brainer. I would push for a prospect and some cash for Hernandez though. Can't just give him away...

As an Astro fan, have to say "Thanks, Rockies". Saved McLane from getting rid of more prospects to get Livan. Feel that Hernandez could help either team, but neither is going anywhere this year.

I have never heard of Righty Hernandez, so I clicked on this article only to find they were talking about Livan Hernandez. Way to false advertise Fox.

I wish all the luck in thte world to Livan. I hated to see him released as he had done a fair job this year, but with him struggling of late, the Twins fighting for the Central Division, and Liriano pitching lights out in AAA for awhile now, it was a move that had to be made. The Twins may have gotten alot younger, but they are hungry, and sooooooo much fun to watch. Other than seeing GoGo sniff his bat for hits, I would like to see Nick Punto and whosoever would be a fellow piranha on this year's team do the "sniff" for runs again. That was as much fun as this year's team. I hope Craig Monroe catches on with someone, too. He's a good guy. It just didn't work out. GO TWINS!!!!!

Z-mac... good call about the lineup but the Twins really only need a righthanded hitting 3B-DH. I just dont see the Rockies giving up too much MLB ready talent that would make a difference so I'm sure it will boil down to money. Who knows though.

Hey guys- I just though I'd jump in and see what you all were saying about Livan. I doubt we'll (Twins) get anything for him save his salary off our hands. I'll let you all know what I know, which is... this could be bad for you guys. The Twins have actually given huge run support for Livan and are suprisingly outscoring the Rockies 553 to 527 this year. Dont forget too that Livan has 139 innings with 199 hits and only 54 K's. VS. say De Los Santos 71/83/78. They will basically be the same pitcher except Livan is a contact pitcher, wich I just dont see working out for you guys with the stadium etc. The Metrodome is actually a pitcher's park I hope I'm wrong . I'm rooting for you though, you guys have always been one of my NL favorites. Classy Team. Good Luck the rest of the way.

I like Livan. You gonna get your hits if you are patient off of him and honestly he is a good 3-4 pitcher..will pitch 500 ball for you. I cannot believe the Twinkies put him on wavers.

It would be interesting to see if Minnesota just lets him go or they get something in return for him. The lineup is pretty battered right now and they should try to get some backup.

Hernandez will walk less and will be less timid. Rockies have the offense to back him up. That was not evident last night. Hernandez will be an improvement over the mediorce AAA journeyman pitcher De Los Santos. The hope is that he can help and follow the example of Glendon Rusch.

Anyone can help the Rockies 3-5 starters at this point. Hopefully they can get this done and have Hernandez in uniform soon.<br /><br /><br /><br />brewsterT<br /><br />If you meant it as a joke, my bad, but it's the humidor.

Hernandezn is a work horse but will give up to many runs pitching in Coors field, even with the humidifier
