The Red Sox, adding catching help for the stretch drive, have signed David Ross to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.

Ross, 31, drew interest from the Red Sox and Phillies after getting released by the Reds. He will report to Class AAA and eventually become the Sox's third catcher behind Jason Varitek and Kevin Cash.

The Sox would need to promote Ross by Aug. 31 to make him eligible for their post-season roster. Ross also could be added for the playoffs if Varitek or Cash were injured.

In 52 games with the Reds this season, Ross batted only .231 but produced a robust .381 on-base percentage.

The Red Sox will be his fifth team, and first in the American League.

Veritek is the leagues best game caller and one of best defensive catchers in the game today. Speaking of washed up how about that 0-5 performance for the 1/4 billion dollar man? LOLOLOLOL

NYYDooosh:

Right, maybe the Sox should get a great catcher like the now steroid shrunken "Pudge" Rodriguez or that hitting dynamo, Molina...who's hitting a whopping THREE points higher than Varitek w/o the same power numbers.

Learn the game before you embarrass yourself again.

Boston picking up David Ross sure can't hurt. He will either be a third catcher on the roster who can't hit, or he will pick up the pace and maybe work himself into a 2009 platoon with Jason Varitek. This could be a GREAT move for Ross is he can take advantage of it.

what is wrong with these COLLEGE KIDS!!

if you are a marginal player.... but decent size, can throw to second base and hit for 300avg with just a little power.... they would have 10 MLB TEAMS banging his coaches door down to talk to him.

when is a smart MLB TEAM going to go to a couple college teams and say.... hey, develope me a few catchers.... we will pay for a new practice field... or pick up two scholorships.....

How does a GM for the reds get the title as smartest man in baseball?? It must have been a toss up between him and the GM for Seattle or Washington!!!!

Honestnytruth,

Have you seen Jason Varitek's hitting numbers this season? Ross would be a good be a good backup for Jason Varitek. When you factor in the fact that they also have a very competent Kevin Cash. It's a no-risk no-loss move that makes sense for a Red Sox team looking for additional depth.

It's good news for Dave too, he's officially gree of Dusty baker.

HawkeyeGirl96

So it was Dusty Baker's fault Ross can't hit? What about Jerry Narron and Pete MacKanin? Did they underutilize him too?

BTW - Personnel decisions are made by the GM, in this case, Walt Jocketty, the smartest man in baseball.

The problem with David Ross has never been his defense but rather, his bat. Red Sox fans will find out for themselves soon enough.

By the way, I LOVE how Ryan Hanigan has handled Reds pitching lately. Cueto and Arroyo look like studs with Ryan behind the plate.

Go Reds!

He never should have been DFA'ed. He was the best of the THREE catchers this joke of a team carries, and he got cut. What a joke. It should have been Paul Bako. And I agree with you hawkeye, Dusty Baker is a f***ing moron and does not deserve to manage a free store, let alone a MLB team. Fire him!!

You're better off, Dave, Dusty Baker is the worst manager in all of baseball, and he didn't utilize your potential.

Hanigan is showing a little potential, but he's befuddled by Arroyo's 15 different curveballs-I could tell last night that Bronson was missing you.

Good Luck!
