Phils get Stairs from Blue Jays
The Jays will receive a prospect in return. The identity of that player has not yet been determined.
The Phillies have been actively searching for bench help, and their urgency only increased after they placed outfielder Geoff Jenkins on the disabled list Saturday. The team attempted to acquire outfielder Mark Kotsay earlier this week, but the Braves traded Kotsay to the Red Sox.
"It will be a good fit for Matt," said Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi, who was in New York to see Toronto in its last trip to Yankee Stadium. "They had Geoff go down and needed someone off the bench. He should be able to help them."
To qualify for the postseason, a player must be on a team's major league roster before Monday. With the Blue Jays fading from contention, Ricciardi said more moves are possible.
"I think you'll see some things happen," he said. "They'll be minor things, but things could pick up in the next day or two."
Stairs is hitting .250 this season with 11 homers and 44 RBIs. He was designated for assignment Thursday to clear a spot for outfielder Travis Snider, who is one of the Jays' top position prospects and will replace Stairs in the outfield.
Snider, 20, was the Jays' first-round pick out of Everett (Wash.) High School in 2006. He began the season at Class A, then jumped to Class AA and Class AAA. In 18 games with Class AAA Syracuse, he was batting .344 with two home runs and 17 RBIs.

who cares about this story? If you need to acquire Stairs to make your team better then you really weren't that good to begin with!!!

98supra,

I guess Howard, Rollins, and Victorino don't count as MAJOR MINORITY'S. You should stay an ex-season ticket holder. The Phillies at one time were lead by a racist manager named Chapman a lloooooooong time ago. Probably before you were even born. And Phiily fans being front runners?? You're an idiot. We boo the outcome not the person. We want winners more then the players want to win and when they don't hustle and play hard, we let them know it. It's that simple. And McNadd didn't say get me minority players. Have you ever looked at a NFL roster?? Get your head out of your A$$

Help me out here on my understanding of the July 31st MLB Trade deadline and trades made after the deadline. Is the only difference is that players traded have to clear waivers to be traded? THANKS.

Tough luck Philly fans, You need a Releiver, and we give you Matt Stairs, You should be upset, considering Toronto has the best bullpen in the game. See ya Big 2-4, too bad ya couldint get 1 more at bat @ Yankee stadium.

Why do we keep picking up outfielder instead of picking up some decent PITCHERS!!!!! As usual we wait and wait and wait and, surprise, the trade deadline comes and goes. So we pick up has-beens on wavers and expect a miracle. And Montgomery, please for the love of God, sell the team to someone who actually knows something about baseball!!!!

I agree with PhillieCubFan that the Phils need to lighten the load of "bad"....really bad relievers and stick with the ones who got you there. And NEVER walk anybody for any reason!!!!How disgusting to lose those 2 games that we had WON!!!!

Well any help off the bench is not a bad thing. Whats bad for this Phillies team is the constant mistakes Charley makes of not enough hit and run, double steals or steals in general. Produce runs, the AL mentality of hit only for runs doesnt work for this team. And while his strings and Pat Gillicks puppet strings are attatched to a ownership group that doesnt believe in latin or minority players, how can we fans expect this team to move foward. WAISTING money on the wrong players constantly stating we have no money, 45 sold out games this season alone, doesnt fool me. Latin organizations will not let the Phillies even speak to their players because of their reputation of being a racist, non paying or extremely cheap team. Why do you think they never land a MAJOR LATIN PLAYER? Their bad reputation in the industry is stuck to them like white on rice. When this team makes an effort to land MAJOR LATIN PLAYERS, NO MATTER THE POSITION, then they will get this ex season ticket holder back. And trust me if they dont make the post season this year, their attendance will hurt again for the next few years. Rememeber we have the worst and most ghetto fans who most of the time are FRONTRUNNERS, YEAH JROLL WAS CORRECT. So say what you want, and think about it, every major maket team, has one dominant latin or minority player, have the Phillies ever had one? Dominant? Thought so. I can't see the Phillies making it to the post season til they do. I only wish that JROLL would be like McNabb and publicly state that they need help from DOMINANT MINORITY PLAYERS IN ORDER TO COMPETE ON A WORLD SERIES LEVEL.

Bear in mind, Phillies fans, that Matt Stairs production has all come off the bench. If he were a regular starter, which his age prevents, chances are his homeruns and RBI totals would be double what they are now.

Maybe Stairs can pitch in the 8th inning. Maybe we can just skip the 8th inning altogether and jump from the 7th right to the 9th.

Agreed, Phils don't need another bat as much as they need relief pitching as evidenced last night when the Phillies let another one get away after a great performance by Cole Hamels against the CUBS. Hey, no matter what Barack Obama says about CUBS fans, they are serious about their baseball and you can see it this year with their intensity.

The Phillies don't need another left handed hitter. They need a manager first and formost. When you have a manager who can not properly make the correct decision to put the right pitchers in the game in the 8 th inning, you have a major problem. When will he realize the decisions to put in Rudy Seanez and Ryan Madsen cost him 2 consecutive games they should have won. Get rid of the guys who can't pitch in the big leagues and let some one else pitch. The left hander Ayer did a superb job the last Mets game and he takes him out after one inning for a pinch hitter. If you are ahead and have a guy mowing the opposition down let him pitch until he has problems. How simple is that to comprehend? The athletes today are faster, bigger, and stronger than the ones I saw growing up. They pitched 9 innings and sometimes 12 and 15 innings. I even saw Robin Roberts pitch a double header in one day,Today they baby these pitchers. The he pitched 1 inning yesterday and can't be used today has to go. This is plain bull s--t.

Phil's clubhouse will appreciate what Matt brings to the table, and they now have a bona-fide jokester to help relieve pennant pressure!
