Could this series impact Vlad's future in Anaheim?

Angels owner Arte Moreno, speaking to reporters before Game 1 of the Division Series, said that contrary to sabermetric theory, he believes that some players possess an "X factor" that enables them to succeed in clutch situations. He also talked about the need for players whom you would want in a "foxhole," especially in the postseason.

Which again raises the question:

Will the Angels sign Vladimir Guerrero long-term?

The Angels are certain to exercise Guerrero's $15 million club option for next season, and the industry-wide assumption is that Moreno will attempt to sign him to a contract extension this winter.

Guerrero, 32, qualifies as a foxhole guy, frequently playing hurt and sacrificing for his team. He does not, however, qualify as clutch, at least as far as the postseason is concerned.

In 70 career plate appearances in the postseason, Guerrero's batting average/on-base/slugging line is .203-271-.350. Contrast that with Alex Rodriguez, who is widely perceived to be an October flop, yet has a career line of .279-.361-.483 in 166 post-season plate appearances.

Guerrero, as we saw in Game 1, can barely move on the basepaths. He might require surgery on his right knee at the end of the season. Angels manager Mike Scioscia plans to use him exclusively as a designated hitter in this series.

The Angels could decide that they would prefer to invest long-term in first baseman Mark Teixeira, who is four years younger than Guerrero, a Gold Glove defender and switch-hitter with power.

Besides Teixeira, the team's potential free agents include closer Francisco Rodriguez, right-hander Jon Garland and outfielder Juan Rivera. The Angels are likely to decline the $14 million club option on left fielder Garret Anderson, but could seek to re-sign him for a lower salary. They also figure to explore a contract extension on right-hander John Lackey, on whom they hold a $10 million club option.

Yankees' Cano: Yes or no?

Trading second baseman Robinson Cano certainly is an option for the Yankees; virtually every club with a need at the position has expressed interest.

Cano, however, finished strong after adjusting his stance and setup in mid-September, and some with the Yankees believe that he will be more at ease in 2009, saying he tried too hard this season to justify his new four-year, $30 million contract.

The problem for the Yankees is that they need to acquire two starting pitchers, and the top of the free-agent market is thin. CC Sabathia might prefer to go to the west coast and/or stay in the National League. Some baseball people question whether A.J. Burnett possesses the right makeup for New York. Derek Lowe might command a contract too large for the Yankees' liking at age 35.

Thus, trading Cano for a starting pitcher might be necessary.

Padres: No rush to move Peavy

The Padres likely will wait to explore the trade market for right- hander Jake Peavy until after Sabathia, Burnett and Lowe sign their free-agent contracts. As each new deal is signed, Peavy's deal will look even more reasonable.

Peavy is signed for $56 million over the next four seasons, with a $22 million option or $4 million buyout for 2013. He holds a full no-trade clause through 2010, and the Padres would need to consult with his agent, Barry Axelrod, to determine the teams to which Peavy would approve a trade.

The Padres finished the season with a payroll of approximately $70 million. GM Kevin Towers says he expects that number to be lower next season, but not as low as the $40 to $45 million range that some have speculated upon.

The team is leaning toward exercising outfielder Brian Giles' $9 million option rather than paying him a $3 million buyout. Giles turns 38 on Jan. 20, but the Padres recognize that they cannot buy an outfielder with a .398 on-base percentage on the open market.

J.J. knew

The Brewers' J.J. Hardy is realistic about his future with the club, knowing he likely will be traded to make room at shortstop for Alcides Escobar, one of the game's top shortstop prospects.

In fact, Hardy recalls being impressed by Escobar the first time he saw him, when Hardy was rehabilitating a shoulder injury at the Brewers' spring-training facility in Arizona in 2004.

"(The Brewers) had brought over a ton of new kids from the Dominican and Venezuela, all 16 and 17 years old," Hardy says. "I picked out Escobar out of all the guys. I didn't even know he was a shortstop. But he was having fun, smiling, laughing. I gave him bats and gloves. The next thing I knew, he was the shortstop who was going to take my job."

Hardy, though, should be in demand. He led National League shortstops with 74 RBIs, ranked fourth among all shortstops in on-base/slugging percentage and was third overall at short in the plus-minus defensive rankings at Bill James Online.

Byrnes a questionable fit in Arizona

The Diamondbacks almost certainly will consider trading outfielder Eric Byrnes, but some club officials believe that the team's fade after a 21-9 start was attributable, in part, to Byrnes' hamstring troubles.

Byrnes struggled while trying to fight through his injuries and did not play after June 30. "The team's identity was defense and baserunning," one club official says. "With him out, the team's overall defense and baserunning went down."

Still, Byrnes could be the odd man out next season, depending upon whether the Diamondbacks re-sign Adam Dunn or make other moves. His contract would be an issue in trade discussions: Byrnes possesses a no- trade clause and is owed $22 million over the next two seasons.

The final word

Speculation persists throughout the industry that Pat Gillick will abandon plans to retire as Phillies general manager and remain for one more season.

Gillick's response?

"No."

Maybe if the Angel pitchers would actually DRILL SOMEONE AND SEND A MESSAGE to the RedSox hitters, they might actually show they've got some halos!!!

Vlad hasn't been healthy the last THREE postseasons the Angels have been in... I seem to remember Vlad hitting a GRAND SLAM at Fenway in Game 3 of the 2004 ALDS ... before Scioscia screwed that game up by having Washburn pitch to Ortiz as Percival watched from the bullpen!!! When healthy, Vlad is a Monster... unfortunately, he hasn't been.

The thing with VALD is a team like the RED SOX wouldn't sign him onthe cheap. Theo hates players who are free swingers and don't work the count. VLAD is a great hitter when he connect but more times than not against a #1 on a staff he struggles. They know him and can pitch to him. He swings at evrything and for that he is very costly.

Vlad is like A-Rod in some ways but there are differences. He makes a little less money and Madonna won't screw Vlad.

nice 99...don't see you on this board today. guess your team couldn't live up to the hype AGAIN. and vlad is just another arod, only ugilier and stupider with less talent. can't get it done...have you clowns figured out no one is impressed by the regular season yet???

xvier25, its obvious you dont watch the Angels very often. Angels do get on base. Thats what they do best. they dont depend on power hitting. they depend on getting on base, stealing bases, hit and runs, suicide squeeze, first to third running, with the right players that is. vladdy shouldnt try that with a bumm knee. and now they have some power in the middle of the line up. teixeira, vladdy, hunter....and only 1 run, now thats frustrating.
im from Orange County so i love my Angels but i also grew up watching the dodgers so im rooting for them and a freeway series WS. thats would be wicked awesome!!! lol

anyway, Santana has been our ace as of late and i think he will keep the the bahston bats on check while we smash on Dice-noK. He always allows base runners and the Angels are a scrappy team that will take advantage of that. theyve owned dice in every game that hes pitched.
GO HALOS!!!

There are plenty of insults going around here but the m-o-r-o-n-s that make this board intolerable are done for the day.

I like to give people a hard time but do it short of insults. At least I try.

I was in Anaheim in mid-July for the three game sweep. The Sox were'nt so tough on the Angels that weekend. It sucked.

Nice to be on a blog where people aren't constantly insulting one another. I'm an Angels fan and have been for years. Concerning Vlad. Yes, he is impatient at the plate. Yes, he swings at too many first pitches....

But, maybe it's the reason that makes him such a great hitter. It obviously works for him and has for years. Now, if we could just find a way to keep him off the bases.....

Good luck to both teams in the series. The Sox are always tough on the Angels in the playoffs. Maybe that was the understatement of the year.........

Angels/Dodgers World Series? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You funny! East coast owns the AL! Go Sox! Repeat!

I actually like the Angels.....just a little. They train in Tempe so I go to their spring training games. It's great after a long winter without baseball.

Yes. I'm from Rhode Island but I live in Phoenix now. I go to Anaheim every summer to see the Sox play if they have a weekend series vs the Angels. I've been four of the last six years.

Because every team knows the 'book on Vlad' he rarely gets a good first pitch. They'll bounce one or leave it way outside hoping he swings away and gets behind in the count. Nomar was the same way when he was young, a first ball fast ball hitter. I think he's changed a little.

If Vlad held off the first pitch half the time he'd be ahead in the count and get better looks later in the at bat.

I just don't think patience is in his nature. The man has talent and can hit any pitch, toes to nose as they say, but he'd be better off he didn't try to hit those pitches.

I actually like Vlad. You're corect about his need to use Manny as an example. Patience at the plate is a great asset if a player has it. I look at Vlad's impressive stats and wonder how much better they'd be if he was more disciplined.

There's no truth to the rumor that Vlad is being benched today so Mike can use him as a pinch runner late in the game.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, formerly the Anaheim Angels, formerly the California Angels, formerly the Los Angeles Angels..........a team of great tradition.......will not get out of the first round.

Dice-K does walk too many batters. He's always pitching out of jams and drives Sox fans crazy with ten men on base every game. Tonight he's fortunate to be facing a team that chokes in a stadium that will be half empty in the ninth inning as the fair-weather Los Angeles fans of Anaheim leave when their team is down a few runs.

It will be quiet when the Red Sox are giving high fives after the game.

The only thing that happened bad for Vlad was the base running error. He didn't hit anything out but he's getting base hits. You gotta love Vlad though. He's a down to Earth, truly good guy, I'd take him on my team any day! Dice K's gonna have a tough night tonite! GO ANGELS! GO VLADIMIR!

Take away Dice-K's walks this season, look at the numbers. Ace quality. He pitches better in the stretch with runners on base. Of course, you'd rather have clean innings, but he does the job and keeps the team in the game. The Angel's line-up can be incredibly dangerous, but I've seen nothing from Texeira, and it's been nothing but classic Vlad swinging away. Should be interesting to see how Santana does tonight against the Sox, he had a nice year.

How about an Angel Dodger WS??? screw the east coast!

Before the Dodgers/Cubs' NLDS began, I think Ken stopped short of taking the Dodgers to win this series. The way Manny Ramirez has been hitting the baseball, the timely execution & the solid pitching, I won't be shocked if the Dodgers finish the job at home last tomorrow night. Besides, Manny is playing for another fat contract in the offseason, and 2 homers in the first 2 games of this series certainly helps his chances.

The only real Los Angeles team getting out of the first round will be the Dodgers. Bring back the Anaheim Angels.
