Jerry Manuel will be staying with the Mets.

Manuel, who fell just short of taking the New York Mets to a playoff berth after taking over as manager for Willie Randolph, was given a two-year contract Friday.

He also has a club option for 2011.

"Jerry did a very good job taking over the club midseason, and we believe that he is the right person to manage our team and lead us to the postseason," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said in a statement.

The deal comes a day after the Mets announced an extension for Minaya. Both Minaya and Manuel were thought by some to be in jeopardy after the Mets faded late for the second straight season, missing the playoffs once again.

"We have to grow from every time that we get as close as we get and don't make it, and we have to review and kind of marinate on why we don't make it," Manuel said Saturday during a conference call.

"My job is to make sure that each guy is clear with his responsibilities for not being there, for us not making it," he said. "I have to look at myself first, and we have to kind of look at the team and see where we failed, why we failed and talk about it as a group and grow from it."

Manuel took over on an interim basis June 17 from fired manager Randolph, when New York was 34-35. The Mets won just six of their final 15 games, finishing three games behind the Phillies in the NL East and one game behind the Brewers in the NL wild card race.

The Mets lost to the Florida Marlins on the last day of the season. They would have forced a one-game playoff with the Brewers had they won.

Minaya, whose contract runs through 2012, praised Manuel after the manager steadied a group of players that had been on edge during the final weeks of Randolph's tenure. Manuel joined the Mets as first base and outfield coach in 2005, then became bench coach the following season.

"I am thrilled and appreciative for the opportunity that ownership and Omar have given me to continue to manage the Mets," he said in a statement.

"Jerry has done an excellent job in all ways, on and off the field," owner Fred Wilpon said last weekend. "And Jerry is a great gentleman."

Manuel was AL Manager of the Year in 2000 when he led the Chicago White Sox to a league-best 95-67. He was fired by Chicago in 2003 following his sixth season as manager.

Just hope he doesn't **** the Mets up like he did the White Sox a few years ago...

Keep Wright, Reyes, Beltran and Santana from the starters and finally start Chavez in right. Then build a new team around them without Omar!

It's been great to be in the hunt the last three years and to be a pitch away from the series but enough is enough. We have had the better players these last two years but the Phillies have had a better team and have heart. Congrats to the Phils for back to back division titles as we have never done that. Dodgers and the Phillies should be a great series to watch.

how nice Omar hires a guy who played caretaker for 2 yrs without any type of interviews to other skippers. i think Minayas mental thinking is if its not spanish i dont want it. this guy is a racist towards everyone who aint spanish. What do you think about this? Two perfect examples why Minaya is clueless.

He let's Cliff Floyd walk & signs Moises Alou. where's the improvement in LF? Both are injury prone.

He signs Pedro Martinez & what did we get. One healthy non-DL season. Everyone knew back in '04 he was on the verge of breaking down.

It just so happens that both players are Hispanic.

I said this before & I'll said it again. "The front office doesn't care about winning, because they know that they will draw 3.6 million fans at Citi Field no matter how the Met finish".

As a Phillies fan, the first thing I want to say is: let;s have a truce. I don't agree with other Phils' fans who want to go to the Mets' site and rub it in, as things could have easily turned out the other way around. As a matter of fact, if the Phils had not won, I would have been rooting for the Mets. A point that should not be forgotten is that the Mets were 7 to 7.5 games behind the Phillies in late July, or early August, I believe. they overcame that deficit to get into first place and overall, had a good season, hanging in there right down to the last game of the season. If they pick up 2 good relievers, they should be able to win the division in 09 or, at the very least, be right in the mix again. I don;t know what will happen with Wagner but he can be devastating if healthy. Good luck for next year and I hope that the dialogue then can at least be civil and the disagreements can be friendly. Always remember, the guys that play on these teams are not even from the city they represent and, in most cases, they are not even from the state in which the team is located. In this upcoming series, if it is not the Phillies playing, I hope the RAys get there and win. If it ends up being the REd Sox and Dodgers, I could care less who wins.

Jeff Wilpon said all you needed to hear after the Mets where eliminated,"He said that he felt that the 2007 team underperformed and that the 2008 overperformed. How this guy can make this comment is beyond me. His father Fred said before the season started, if his team wasn't playing in late October the season was a failure. These guys need to get on the same page.

The i see it a fan really doesnt care about the racial makeup of a teams as long as it produces and makes it to the post season.I think all teams need a blend and a chemistry to be successful. Look at tampa Bay. i think Manuel deserved a shot. It wasnt his fault. he made some mistakes but the bullpen starting Pitching reyes and wright are the ones to blame. The tatis injury was a killer believe it or not. the Mets need a strong veteran leader like Chipper Jones to lead this team and push these stars who continue to take the last 2 weeks of the season off . there is no leader on this club. Minaya made the team better and competitive but also brought in some losers and made some bad trades as well. In order to get over the top the Mets need alot. pedro is done, they need a closer and KRod would be a waste of money. They need a left fielder, second Baseman, catcher and a whole lot of bullpen changes. Most of all they need a veteran winner to lead this team!!!!

deadted
excellent points on mets he is horrible as a GM.
Unless the cubs pull off a boston like comeback I have to tip my hat to you and say you were right.. I won't yet but I'm reaching for the bill of cap

next up for manuel: his own subway sandwich ad. then after this team tanks because of minaya's incompetence, he'll get fired and get paid for a year for free. i'm not getting into the minaya racist thing, but he's a terrible GM and the wilpons had no business giving that bozo the keys for another 4 years.

I am sick of reading comments about Omar Minaya and the idea that he is a racist with anyone not Latin. In so far as his putting a team together, Omar brought Pedro Martinez here which immediately brought a renewed confidence tot he fans that the Mmets were going to be contenders again. His arrival led to other core players deciding to come to NY too. Yes, they were Latin too but they were legitimate stars. The Mets needed a closer and Omar brought (the best one avasilable) Billy Wagner here. Was he Latin? You can only trade for and sign free agent players who are available.
The Mets need a leftfielder who can hit in the clutch, the7y need to revamp the bullpen and will need a starter to replace Oliver Perez if he signs elsewhere which is a strong possibility. While we can't be sure of what will happen with Pedro Martinez I think he will be offered a one year deal and that if he doesn't feel like he can do the job that he will retire. I don't think that he will be a guy to just hang on and that the organization respects him enough to give him a deal laced with incentives so as not to "dump him" as some of you wish for. Omar will sign or trade for whomever he thinks will help this club get over the hump. His trade last year for Ryan Church (not Latin) would have done just that if not for the head injuries. Church was tearing it up and would have been an All Star if not for the concussions.
We need as Mets fans to see the truth about our club and the talents of our competitors.
Maybe, we were not quite good enough to win this year...Spring Training is just 140 days away!

This is stupid, but they are keeping Omar so I presume they are happy by finishing second for the last two years. Also, the way they pitch Santana at the end, their one and only star may have a dead arm by the middle of next season. So let?s go mutts owners keep it up you guys will finish on the cellar eventually.

Well, I guess The Wilpons (Fred & Jeff) don't care about winning. First they keep Minaya, who is clueless when it comes to putting a team together. Now we can watch a full season of Manuel mishandling the bullpen... Boy, I'm starting to miss Steve "Mr Baseball Tonight" Phillips & Bobby Valentine

Well, as a Mets fan since growing up in Jersey in the 70s, I'll take my shots too;

Manuel deserves a chance to sink or swim on his own. To judge him on this season, when he had no real input on the roster and then had to dig out from under Randolph's hole was not his fault. The way Randolph was dismissed was inexcusable. The fact that he kept his job after last season's collapse was inexcusable.
Why did Minaya keep Heilman? Pedro Feliciano? Any of the other bullpen stiffs who couldn't get three outs without giving up runs?
Is there any reason we "gave" Kazmir away? How can the trade for Paul LoDuca be considered a good one by the author of that post? The Milledge trade was a good one. Giving away Nolan Ryan back in the day was not.
Kind of funny how many people on these boards, early in the season, were talking trash about them bringing Delgado back.
The Cubs have sucked for well over 50 years and will not win the World Series anytime soon. The Yankees will not win next year. The Dodgers? Hmmmm.....Manny provided a spark to that clubhouse. It wasn't Joe Torre. Or Andruw Jones.
The Mariners will not win the World Series in my lifetime. I would love to see a Mets outfield next season of Manny in left, Beltran in center, and Ichiro in right. You playing attention Omar? Trade the Mariners some nobodies or the dead arms in the bullpen.
As for all of you hating on the hispanics & latinos, I am white. If you think there is a problem, look around the major leagues, and look at some of the best players in the game. Sorry, but Santana, Pujols, Alex Rodriguez, and many others are not white. Yes, there are many great black players, there are many great white players, let's not hate on one race.
By the way, let's all "JUST SAY NOBAMA". We don't want an amateur in the White House

manuel rewarded for stabbing Willie Randolf in the back. Saying he knew nothing of Willie's upcomming firing. Yeah, right. Someone pull the knife out of Wilie's back.

and the mets did not choke, they just got outlasted. next year will be the same thing, down to the wire, Phills, Mets, and Marlins.

catchdog i agree with you 98%. i think the mets blew 8 games that Johan left, and i dont think that argenis reyes will be anything more than a back up or minor leaguer. Especially with Daniel Murphy playing 2nd next year.

And just a quick addition to all his facts...the mets wouldve won the division by 8 games had games been 8 innings long rather than 9.
