Selig, MLB could've avoided this muddy mess

PHILADELPHIA - I can't believe I'm writing this, but Major League Baseball needs a reminder and maybe even a kick to the head.

This is the World Series, ladies and gentlemen.

World Series games should feature the best umpires.

World Series games should not start anywhere near 10 p.m. ET.

And most of all, World Series games should never, ever be played in conditions that compromise the integrity of the competition.

That's what happened Monday night, no matter how commissioner Bud Selig wants to spin it. Selig again was in something of a no-win position because of inaccurate weather forecasts. But he should have halted Game 5 much sooner.

Instead, the game was not suspended until after the top of the sixth inning, an inning in which the Rays tied the score, 2-2, with standing water in the infield.

I can't read the mind of Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, but I'm willing to bet that he didn't speak to the media afterward because he believes his team still should be leading, 2-1.

With two outs, the Rays' B.J. Upton hit a two-hopper to Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins. The ball appeared to skip cleanly off the infield dirt, but as Rollins ranged to his left, his footing might not have been secure. The ball bounced off the heel of his glove for an infield single, the Rays suddenly had life.

Upton proceeded to steal second, raising the question of whether he can walk on water. Carlos Pena followed with an opposite-field RBI single, tying the score on a night when the Rays were facing elimination and trailing 2-0 in the first inning.

We can debate whether Rollins would have fielded Upton's ball under better conditions and whether the wind and rain adversely affected Phillies left-hander Cole Hamels. But frankly, the discussion should not even be taking place. The game should have been stopped the moment the rain intensified, which was long before the sixth inning.

Selig himself said he went downstairs to investigate in the fourth inning and returned again in the fifth. He said that the Phillies' groundskeeper, Mike Boekholder, kept telling him, "The field's OK. The field's OK." Tim Welke, the crew chief for the six-umpire team, concurred, saying the pitcher's mound and batter's box were never compromised.

Such arguments might have, ahem, held water if applied to a regular-season game in April. The outcome of a World Series game, however, should be determined only by the competing teams, not bad weather, not poor umpiring. What was Selig waiting for? The conditions got progressively worse on Monday night and the weather is not expected to be any better on Tuesday.

A little standing water? No problem. (Julie Jacobson / Associated Press)

It wasn't all bad for Bud — he made the right call beforehand when he decided that the game would be completed regardless of the score or inning. Yes, Selig said that he would have broken his sport's own rules, which allow an official game to be suspended only if the score is tied.

Really, though, that one was easy — the uproar over a rain-shortened World Series clincher would have dwarfed the outcry over the All-Star Game tie in 2002. Selig takes pride in such common-sense decisions, and in fairness many of his calls are not as simple as they seem.

Still, the basic question remains: Why start one World Series game at 10:06 p.m. ET and allow another to continue in a downpour?

Game 3 was played without interruption once it began after a 91-minute delay, and it turned into a mini-classic. The problem was, it drew the lowest television rating of any game in World Series history. Yes, I work for FOX, but someone please tell me: How exactly was the late start good for the game?

Granted, some fans could not have returned the next day if there had been a postponement, and the weather for the off-day that would have been lost — Tuesday — looked threatening. Well, one step at a time.

Selig said Monday night that, "we will stay here if we have to celebrate Thanksgiving here." That should have been his approach from the start.

The umpires are less under Selig's control; their collective-bargaining agreement restricts the use of the best umps in the playoffs and World Series. That's right, umpires cannot work in back-to-back postseason series in a single year or in back-to-back World Series.

The latter provision is plainly ridiculous; if the best players can teams can qualify for the World Series two years in a row, why can't the best umpires? When the umpires' CBA expires after next season, Selig should demand a change.

When it comes to the World Series, baseball needs to think bigger, in every way. With each decision, Selig need only ask himself: How does baseball's showcase event deserve to be treated? That question produced the correct answer Monday night when Selig refused to allow a rain-shortened game. But he blew it by failing to postpone Game 3 and by allowing Game 5 to disintegrate into a muddy mess.

It's the World Series, for crying out loud.

Start acting like it.

Next year hopefully Selig will start to use his weather controlling super-device and nix all the bad weather before it hits. This is the World Series for God's sake! In Fact, God himself should take note and stop his interfering with such an important - no, a monumentous occasion such as the WS!

I can't believe CSN had the nerve to let Ken on their show. It's not like he ever has a good thing to say about us. But he made up some stuff how the Phils are going to win. Gee nothing like stating the obvious! What a jerk. Ken go get a ladder so you can look taller than my 10 year old when you are on tv.

selig is was and always be a complete and utter ****. he's easily the worst baseball commissioner of all time. after his conflict of interest in being comish and owning the brewers, turning a blind eye to PHD's and then pretending to get tough, he's done nothing good for baseball. this latest episode only proves is incompentence. anyone with a clue can see the game should have been called immediately after the bottom of the fifth as the rain was completely out of control at that point. no matter what happens now, the legitimacy of the outcome and winner of the series can be called into question. nice job bud.

Selig was in a no win situation. If they call the game earlier and it ends up that the rain wasn't as heavy as they anticipated but then rains hard Tuesday, he is an idiot and messed everything up by not letting them play. If they call the game earlier and the Phils win as a result of a shortened game, he is an idiot. If they stop the game with the Phils ahead and decide to keep playing, he is an idiot who doesn't know or care about the rules of his own game. He isn't a genius, but he takes much more grief than he deserves.

did anyone ask the genius commish what he would have done had the rays been winning when the farce was called? sure, no one "wanted to see it end this way", but i'm sure t.b. would have screamed had they been deprived of a win "by the rules of the game".
what a joke.

WAH, WAH, WAH... everybody's crying and getting their excuses ready for any outcome. Why doesn't everyone just shut up, man up and just PLAY (or watch) the game like a man whenever it's played, under whatever conditions. No excuses, no crying. All complainers: stop being wussies (and replace the W with a P, thank you very much).

If Ken thought it was all jacked up then was more then like correct. Joe Tim and Ken should be fired for putting a black eye on baseball. Joe saing on TV I would say what my boss told me say. Tim with his miss information. Ken must be pay per response.

When I first read the opposite here on the game call, I supported Bud's decision. THat I do - for the scenario that played out.

That said, reading this side now, I have to retract what I said as far as the game.

If the weather was poor, it should not have been played and waited for another day. You will have people on both sides of the fence complaining about this decision and how it affected the teams:

Phillies (if lose): You cheated us out of winning the series on our field. (If win - obviously nothing wrong, because they win the series).

Rays (if lose): You got our hopes up then dashed. (if win) Well, we get to have a chance to win it on OUR turf.

*******

But, as we all know Selig has made a couple of poor decisions this year that were weather related. Like it or not, the Astros were cheated out of playing in a neutral location because Selig chose to have the games played in Milwaukee - 90 miles from Chicago.

Fair? - just like the 2005 incident where the Astros were denied their home field advantage by Selig when he ordered them to keep the roof open - NO, NO, NO.

Result? - Astros lose their moral, play poorly, White Sox win and defeat an 84 year curse.

Now, what happened as far as this year? - Hurricane Ike. And look, I know McLane screwed up there too - my point is that Selig also was associated with that decision - and it was based on the weather.

**********

To Phillies and Rays fans (who, BTW, I think this is the best matchup because both teams want to play and win), I truly feel bad for you guys and how you feel about Selig. We've been there.

To both team's players (if they can read this stuff), don't let this decision bother you. And, I hope that it dries up enough so you guys can play safely. I don't care how much you make, it means nothing if you're injured on a bad field.

Thanks Ken for writing everything I feel about this series. To start I'm a full fleged Phils fan an to tell the truth I don't feel the way I should with my team a game away from a title. Why? To Start the Umpires in this series are the worst lot I have ever seen and whoever picked this bunch of Sapps should be fired. 2nd to start a game at 10 o'clock at night for 2 east coast teams because they must get the games in for there Bosses at fox is lame. Nobody Cares if no one is awake. and last but not least this comish has to go. He let this game start and continue even though the players who are supposed to be the big story here were very much in danger of injury. All to get the Game in. What an Idiot. He compimised the players well being for the almighty Fox schedule. And what about us fans stayin up at all hours of the night to watch these games so somebody on the west coast can watch it too. Does anyone on the west coast care about this series anyway? If it was The Dodgers and Angels I wouldn't care so why should they care about seeing these games. This sport has really showed what its all about during what should be an exciting Ride for fans. Its not about the players and fans. Selig must think we all come to hear his stupid words or watch these pathetic umpires. he is wrong but sadly he doesn't even know it.

Hey Cloud, let me guess: Your from New Yawk or Bawstan, right? Here's an Idia I'm sure you would like. (not)
Let's just take All the "small market teams out of MLB and just have a league with the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Cubs White Sox, Red Sox, Rangers, Astros, and Braves, and then we wouldn't have to worry about the rest of the inconsequential teams gtetting in the way of YOUR gane.
PUNKS!

Dirkbillboard, stop moaning, you got pwned.

All in all this World Series has been a joke, then again without the dreadful decisions, from both the umps and the MLB, noone would be talking about it at all, unless you're from Philadelphia or are a glory seeking Rays fan
