Cubs land Gregg in deal with Marlins
Gregg, 30, closed for the Marlins for most of last season, but the Cubs likely would use him as a bridge to Carlos Marmol if Wood departed as a free agent.
Marmol would take over as the closer, with the Cubs likely using a number of relievers including Gregg, Jeff Samardzija, Angel Guzman, Neal Cotts, and Kevin Hart leading up to the ninth inning.
In return, the Marlins receive 21-year-old Class AA right-hander Jose Ceda.
The Marlins have now traded four arbitration-eligible players since the end of last season Gregg, first baseman Mike Jacobs, left-hander Scott Olsen and outfielder Josh Willingham.
Gregg tied with the Rockies' Manuel Corpas for the major-league lead in blown saves last season, finishing 29-for-38 in save opportunities with a 3.41 ERA. He was 7-8 with in 72 relief appearances, holding batters to a .203 average.
The right-handed Ceda was 4-3 with nine saves and a 3.83 ERA last season in minor league stints at Class A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee.

This is a joke, and the worst move the Cubs have ever made. Lets see here Gregg or Woods....gee let me think. 34 saves with only a few blown or 29 of 34 or whatever it was blown....we are getting a crap pitcher and letting a good prospect go. I'm not a hundred percent sure what mgmt was thinking when they did this but I would have to believe they were smoking something. This is a sad day to be a cubs fan.

At the same time, as loyal a person K Wood is. I really hope he finds a team that will be loyal back to him. And someone said it other comments where ever Wood goes he will always be a cub. I still can't believe this.

Think Gregg could help the Cubs, as he appears less injury prone than Wood. However, appears that the Cubs are not only kissing Woods goodbye, but any chance of getting Peavy, since Ceda was one of the prime prospects that would have been going to San Diego.

Uhhhhhh, I think they got a guy like Howry, because Howrys gone! As to his being a leader in blown saves, I dont think he will be the closer here anyway? Either Wood will be back or Marmol will get the job. Gregg would be taking Marmols job then. justinept27: I agree with you wholeheartedly. Kerry Wood has always been a class act, through all his injuries which werent his fault. I hope he will be back. If not, I will wish him the best.

It's being reported that this trade isn't being made as a fallback in case Wood leaves... it's being made because Wood will leave via free agency.

Now. Kerry Wood never lived up to his potential. He never became the dominant pitcher he was expected to become - never won 15 games and only showed flashes of brilliance before arm injuries slowed his career.

But still. To a Cubs fan, Kerry Wood is iconic. He never shifted blame - always took his hardships like a man - when asked about his performance in game 7 of the 2003 NLCS said "I choked." He didn't make excuses like some pitchers ... never blamed the media or his teammates... never cussed out the fans.

He just wanted to pitch and to help the Cubs win... and ...when his arm allowed him to... that's what he did.

He is an example of loyalty for Cubs fans, turning down more money and more years from other clubs these past two years because he felt a sense of guilt over not being able to pitch for much of the 3-year $30 million contract he signed after the 2003 season.

Wherever he goes. He'll always be a Cub.

Good luck.

I have to question this move. Dont think we really needed to go and get someone else who has problems holding runners. We have Howry for that. It really does not matter if he is closing, he has proven that he has problems holding runners. Also we gave up Ceda, someone that has great upside and throws hard as well.

The Cubs could do a lot worse. If hes not being counted on to close, hes a good addition to anyones bullpen. Hes about 30, so barring injury, hes not gonna get any worse, and the change of scenery might actually help him.

I dont get this trade, he reminds me too much of Bob Howry. I could be wrong, but isnt this the guy that imploded vs the Cubs in Florida? He gave up that huge homerun to Ward to cap a 4 or 5 run 9th inning. We need to focus on keeping Wood and siging a power hitting left handed batter (ahem adam dunn) and not on picking up mediocre relievers.

Great now we have someone tied for the league lead in blow saves. Nice, why don't we just go and get Carl Pavano next? What the heck are they thinking. They should have held on to Ceda. My understanding is he has quite an upside and far more potential.

Now if they re-sign Wood, they can add Gregg in the trade offer to San Diego for Peavy.

Thats a pretty good acquisition to me...if you cant hit him sign him....

Good acquisition for the Cubs bullpen. We already have Marmol for the closer (in case of no return of Wood) ... could be a setup

Growing up in South Florida, and I'm now a Marlins fan living in Chicago. Unfortunately I dont have the numbers to back me up, but I know for a fact Gregg blew a number of saves last season and Marlins fans (the mighty few of us) couldn't wait to rid of this guy. I know he's can throw some heat and probably won't close for the Cubs, but nonetheless, he's not very good.

For the Cubs sake I hope I'm wrong and they get the best out of him.

Is being the first really that important. Maybe next time you should bring something noteworthy to the table. Nice pickup by the Cubs replacing Howry. Gregg can bring it, just keep the BB's low.
