Swarbrick had said he would evaluate Weis' performance and planned to meet with the coach on Dec. 8. Swarbrick was on the West Coast raising money and Weis was recruiting, Heisler said.
Weis has seven years left on a 10-year contract, but some Irish fans upset by some embarrassing losses had called for his firing. The Irish lost to Syracuse when the Orange were 2-8, marking the first loss ever by Notre Dame to an eight-loss team.

Five Walter Camp finalists unveiled
NEW HAVEN, Conn. | Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, and four Big 12 players are finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation's Player of the Year award.
Three quarterbacks -- Oklahoma's Sam Bradford, Texas' Colt McCoy and Texas Tech's Graham Harrell -- and Harrell's teammate, receiver Michael Crabtree, are the other finalists.
The winner will be announced Dec. 11 after a vote by the 119 Football Bowl Subdivision coaches and sports information directors.

Sources: Braves to acquire Vazquez
ATLANTA | The Chicago White Sox reached a tentative deal with the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday that would send pitcher Javier Vazquez to Atlanta, two people familiar with the deal said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Vazquez must take a physical, one of the people said, and he was likely to be examined today.
It was unclear who the Braves would send to Chicago for Vazquez. The righthander was 12-16 with a 4.67 ERA in 33 starts last season.

Stars' Avery draws suspension
DALLAS | The NHL indefinitely suspended Stars forward Sean Avery on Tuesday, hours after Avery made a crude reference to former girlfriends.
Avery's inflammatory comments came following a morning skate in Calgary, Alberta. He said, "I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my (former girlfriends). I don't know what that's about." Avery used a crass term to refer to ex-girlfriends now dating other people.
Avery's ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert of the television show "24" is dating Calgary defenseman Dion Phaneuf; she had been romantically linked to Mike Komisarek of Montreal. Avery also dated Rachel Hunter, the former Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model and actress who is now the girlfriend of Los Angeles center Jarrett Stoll.

Phelps picks up another honor
NEW YORK | Michael Phelps will be the first swimmer honored as Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year.
Phelps broke Mark Spitz's iconic record with eight gold medals at the Beijing Olympics in August and became the winningest Olympian ever with his 14 career victories.
Sports Illustrated Group editor Terry McDonell called the selection of Phelps "the easiest choice I have made."

Ballesteros has more surgery
MADRID, Spain | Five-time major champion Seve Ballesteros underwent more surgery Tuesday, this time to drain fluid from his brain.
Ballesteros was in stable condition in the intensive care unit after the operation to implant a valve in his brain, La Paz hospital said.
Doctors also repaired a bone defect stemming from one of the procedures the golf great has undergone since his initial operation on Oct. 24 to remove a malignant brain tumor.
