Source: Giants, Renteria reach 2-year, $18.5M deal
"We have clearly passed all the hurdles and there's nothing else to do on terms, nothing else to do in respects to a physical," Renteria's agent, Barry Meister, said Thursday in a phone interview with The Associated Press. "I always let the team make the announcement."
The deal will be announced Thursday afternoon.
Renteria, 33, will take over for Omar Vizquel at shortstop, with Emmanuel Burris likely moving to second base. The Cardinals also had been interested in Renteria, but reportedly have traded for Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. The Dodgers also had shown interest in Renteria as a possible replacement for Rafael Furcal.
The Tigers declined to offer Renteria salary arbitration after he batted .270 for them last season with a .317 on-base percentage, 10 homers and 55 RBIs.

Congrat's giants on a great pickup. Edger is a professional hitter, I am not sure I could stand another summer of ...rotating minor league hitters. We found a few gems. But the fans will get restless and stop paying the money ,especially in this economy. GO GIANT'S.... Now let's have the big splash....C.C Would look good alongside Tim and Matt. Sabean keep up the great work....

Sorry Bo-Sox and Detroit fans, but Renteria delivers in the NL and chokes in the AL. Go look at his stat history.

I doubt he will have a good year. I lived in Detroit last year and went to a bunch of games at Comerica Park and let me be the first to say that the Giants flushed their money down the tube. Thsi guy is 33 years old, past his prime but still has descent years left, but the way he hit, fielded and just played last year was actualyl an embarassment as compared to the player he used to be...For $9M a year, thats a joke, maybe 2.5 a year is justifiable because if you saw what I saw on a day in day out basis then you woudl agree...Way to go Giants just bought a name and nto the player!!

Whoever thinks this is a bad deal for the Giants will eat their words next season. Renteria will have an incredible season, just wait and see.....

I've been a lifelong Giants fan and see stupid things like this every year. Rennie Stennett, Bill Madlock, the list goes on and on. But hope remains that by some miracle one of these deals will pay off. Good pitching, no hitting equals less than 500 ball. Sorry Dan, just another year of frustration.

seems the gint's may just turn a corner soon. isn't young arms and a few sluggers the way to go?

Lets save the negative commentary until the end of September. At least the Giants are attempting to improve their team. They have been the busiest this offseason.

And if they wind up with CC, they will have at least built a team that could contend in the weak NL West.

Good for them.

Renteria cant hit and he cant field. So where did they come up with 2 years 18.5

Can you say, The Giants overpaid once again?

2 years ago he hit around 350 for the Braves. I'd much rather have Renteria for 2 years than Furcal for 4 years. Furcal wants more money and gets injured too often. Burress will be fine at second. And if Frandsen ends up doing really well I'm sure Renteria can be traded to a contender later on.

The Giants get Renteria -- Big deal!

18.5m for 2 years. What a rip off!

The Giants are insane to pay Rent-a-Wreck 18.5M. His glove is a joke and he has minimal power. Nice pick-up!

Speaking as one who follows the Tigers, I say good riddance. He was a waste of time in Detroit.

Unbelievable. The Giants could've plugged their SS hole w/ a 17 year old Mexican for 15,000 pesos, and that kid probably would hit, field, run, and speak English better. Idiots, they are w/ this stupid signing. People are suffering, suffering, suffering. Losing jobs, losing lives. And what do the Giants do? Pay a short-stop 10 million to catch a ball now and then. And to swat it, now and then. All so they can finish 73-89. America has been berry, berry good to foreigners in sports. >(

Time for the Pirates to add Vizquel, have him bat lead-off. Also, watch out World Series, here come the Pirates. The Giants just paid nearly 10 million a year for a guy who might keep hitting, but will watch more balls go by him than into his suspect glove.

There are a few question marks here, but should probably pan out, he is after all a much better player in the N.L. than he ever was in the A.L for whatever reason

$9 mil per season. Are you kidding me? Guy is on the down side of his career and you shell out this kinda of scratch. Embarrassing.

What happened to the youth movement? What happened to building talent within their farm system? The Giants didn't/couldn't have developed a shortstop during Vizquel's tenure. You knew Vizquel was at the end of the career. Same with Rich Aurilia.

Listen, Giants organization, if you want to start ponying up cash, that's great! But, let's get a bat or 2 that can hit water. Enough with the walk, bunt and single to score a run offense. Enough with overspending on guys who bat .270 with 10 homers and 55 rbi's. QUIT OVERPAYING FOR SCRUBS! Use that money to get some young hungry guys who want to win!!!!
